Top 6@6 Week #34 Headliner Poll: Post Your 6 Favorite Tracks By Eric Clapton Solo

Subtitled: Part II of the Slowhand Week

First: The Who’s, What’s, Where’s & Why’s of the Headliner Poll

In an attempt to squeeze as many bands in the shortest amount of time possible, The Monday 6 @ 6 Polls include a Headliner poll. This Eric Clapton poll, like the featured Cream thread will be closed and tallied 7 days from today, Monday December 16, 2002 at or about 6PM EDT. Results from all polls will be posted a few minutes later on that same day in Week #35’s featured Concrete Blond 6 @ 6 Poll.

Why you ask? After the ZZ Top poll, sometime this decade, the plan is to compile all the votes from the SDMB & post them in a few threads. Then I’ll burn a several volume CD set & mail ‘em out to the voters who helped keep these threads going. Here are links to the artists we’ve already closed polling on:

The Clash § Elvis Costello § Collective Soul § Alice Cooper § Cheap Trick § Captain Beefheart (& His Magic Band) § Nick Cave (& The Bad Seeds) § Leonard Cohen § The Cars (Benjamin Orr, Rick Ocasek) § Neko Case (& Her Boyfriends) / New Pornographers § Canned Heat § J J Cale § Johnny Cash (& The Tennessee Two) § Cab Calloway § Dave Clark Five § The Bonzo (Doo-Dah) Dog Band§ Cake§ Beck (Hanson) § Jimmy Buffett § Jeff Buckley § The Byrds § Buffalo Springfield § Bush § Kate Bush § Jackson Browne § James Brown § Better Than Ezra § Banarama § David Bowie / (Tin Machine) Boston § Bon Jovi § Blur § Belle & Sebastian§ Blue Öyster Cult § Blondie§ Blink 182§ Black Sabbath§ The Black Crowes§ Bjork / Sugarcubes§ B-52’s§ Chuck Berry§ Beastie Boys§ Jeff Beck§ The Band / Robbie Robertson§ The Beach Boys§ The Beatles§ The Animals§ Tori Amos § Alice In Chains § The Allman Brothers§ AC/DC § Abba& Aerosmith polls.

It only takes a minute to vote, and you can compare your faves with other dopers who voted next week

Second: The Poll & How it Works

It’s simple enough, post your 6 favorite songs by the artist. Personal observations, opinions, liner notes, comments and the like are always welcome but are in no means required. You May include Cover Versions and of course, duets. If you specify Live version, it will be noted, but tallied together with the studio version of the same title.

Lastly: The Headliner Poll Artist of the Week

Without further ado…Slowhand himself: Eric Clapton.

Here are my 6 ERIC CLAPTON selections:

  1. After Midnight
  2. She’s Waiting
  3. Cocaine
  4. Slunky
  5. The Core
  6. Mainline Florida

Come on, you gotta be able to select 6 of you all time faves.

Thanking you all in advance I hope to see you at the Cream and Derek & The Dominos polls. Have a great week!

  1. Cocaine
  2. Pretending
  3. Blues Before Sunrise
  4. How Long Blues
  5. Layla (Unplugged)
  6. Five Long Years
  1. Lay Down Sally
  2. See What Love Can Do
  3. Let It Rain
  4. Motherless children
  5. The Core
  6. Mainline Florida

tough choices, too many choices. Gonna agree with JBW for my top 2, although i could flip each around depending on the day.

#6- Wonderful Tonight (would be ranked higher if some of the lyrics weren’t so awful!)
#5- The Core
#4- Promises
#3- Miss You
#2- Motherless Child
#1- Let It Grow

  1. Before You Accuse Me
  2. Wonderful Tonight
  3. Runnin on Faith
  4. Tears in Heaven
  5. Cocaine
  6. Let it Rain
  1. I shot the sherrif
  2. Lay down Sally
  3. Wonderful tonight
  4. Cocaine
  5. Layla (unplugged)
  6. Tears in heaven (by a mile)

Lonely Stranger
Layla(unplugged)
Cocaine
Running on Faith
Tears in Heaven
After Midnight

I shot the Sheriff
Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door
After Midnight
Tears in Heaven
Layla (unplugged)
Cocaine

I like Clapton as a guitarist, but much of his solo work is bland beyond belief. He’s an incredible sideman, but a mediocre solo act.

  1. Further on Down the Road (on “The Last Waltz”)
  2. Cocaine
  3. After Midnight
  4. Before You Accuse Me
  5. Layla (unplugged)

Can’t think of a 5th, but any of these except #1 are inferior to any of my the Derek and the Dominoes choices.

Ditto RealityChuck. Derek and the Dominoes tunes blow E.C.'s solo stuff out of the water (Blind Faith is also pretty darned good).

But, here are my top 6 for Clapton:

  1. Before You Accuse Me
  2. Let it Rain
  3. After Midnight
  4. Wonderful Tonight

hm… to be honest, those are the only ones I can think of that I really like.

Have You Heard (not really a solo effort - it’s from “Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton.” But one of EC very best efforts, and I’m pretty sure it’s the first time he sang lead on an album.)
Motherless Children
Please Be With Me (great Cowboy tune by Boyer and Talton!)
After Midnight
Running on Faith
Willie and the Hand Jive

  1. Wonderful Tonight
  2. Let it Rain
  3. I Shot the Sheriff
  4. Motherless Children
  5. Let it Grow
  6. Lay Down Sally
  1. Lay Down Sally
  2. Hello Old Friend
  3. Running on Faith
  4. Motherless Children
  5. Let it Rain
  6. Let it Grow
  1. Wonderful Tonight
  2. Layla (unplugged)
  3. Lay Down Sally
  4. Tears in Heaven

Sorry, I can’t think of a 5th or 6th offhand.

  1. Motherless Children
  2. Tears in Heaven
  3. Cocaine
  4. Farther on Down the Road
  5. Let It Grow
  6. After Midnight

  1. After Midnight
  2. I Shot the Sherriff

  4. Motherless Child
  5. Wonderful Tonight
  6. Cocaine
  1. Motherless Children (regardless of EC’s solo mediocrity, this is a great song)
  2. Promises
  3. Lay Down Sally
  4. After Midnight
  5. The Core
  6. Cocaine
  1. Let It Grow
  2. I Shot the Sherriff
