What a disaster that was. Personally I liked the upscale Diner concept better than an Italian restaurant, becuase seriously, how difficult is to do an Italian restaurant. Well apprently it was pretty difficult. No wine for an Italian resturant.? That has got to be possibly the single stupidest mistake I have ever seen on this show. And that desert? Blue cheese and watermelon? GAG
As for the diner, I think the consept was very good, but the execution was pretty poor. There are ways to do burgers that are high-end, gourmet, but I guess they didn’t do that. I looked at the recipe on the Top Chef website and was underwhelmed with the creativity of it. It seemed rather ordinary for a “fancy” burger. Same with the desert.
I feel the contestants getting criticized for how they worked the front was a bit unfair, in the sense that the other contestants didn’t get judged on that because they didn’t do it. The other folks got to cook, which js clearly where they are all comfortable.
In the end, I have no problem with Michael going. Not becuase he didn’t get dishes for the pits, but because he didn’t seem to do anything.
Also, Marcel’s rap was kind of lame, but so what. He’s obviously just trying to pass some time and vent a bit. What was really ridiculous was Ilan saying he was on the roof “crying”. God I hate that guy.
Next week looks very interesting, although I am well aware of the reality show tendency to over-hype their upcomng shows.
I didn’t realize what kind of a stealth douchebag Ilan is until the last couple of weeks. I’m glad his little foam joke backfired on him in the Quickfire. Maybe those foams aren’t as easy as hey look, huh?
Ilan trying to talk Elia into scumbagging Marcel. MAJOR douche move. The guy is a freaking lizard. I hate him.
Sam is usually competent but has an arrogant streak a mile wide and is nowhere near as cool as he thinks he is. And didn’t the Don Johnson, three o’clock shadow look go out of style like 20 years ago.
For the life of me, I can’t understand the constant hatred and harrassment of Marcel. Yes, he’s a dork, yes he likes to make foams and gelees. So what? Why does that provoke such eye-bulging, violent rage from these assholes? Marcel seems to me like he’s probably a pretty decent kid. He tries to be nice to people even after they threaten him with physical violence. Cliff said he wanted to punch Marcel in the jaw because Marcel chose him for his team. What? He deserves to physically assaulted for thinking you’re a good cook and a desirable team member? What is that about?
Speaking of Cliff, I’m starting to think he has a bit of a patronizing attitude towards women and a bit of an arrogant streak of his own. Something about his dismissive “pick one of them” moment kind of rubbed me the wrong way and I had been kind of pulling for him until this episode.
Honestly, the only two likeable players left are Elia and Marcel. I have a feeling Sam is going to win but I’m kind of hoping for an upset by Elia.
It looks like something really nasty is going to happen next week. If the TWOP spoilers are right, they’re going to do something really beyond the pale to Marcel. It might be hard to watch.
By the way, I thought the reason for firing Mike was kind of lame. Not that he was necessarily the wrong choice, but firing him for not going off his shopping list and getting olive pit receptacles seemed kind of ad hoc to me. Sam was really the biggest fuck-up this week.
I’ve been saying that from day 1. I just don’t get what all the venom toward Marcel is all about. Either he’s really an asshole off camera or the producers are creating a bit of controversy to keep people tuned in.
The rumor is that The “cool kids” caught him when he was asleep and shaved his head. There’s also a spoiler going around that Elia then shaved her own head in solidarity with Marcel.
I was wondering where everyone was last night. What a bomb of a show, this week’s!. The whole hate-Marcel thing is getting out of hand. Funny thing is that, from day one, I hated the guy and now I am rooting for him.
Michael was dropped because it was either him or Cliff. Not because of either’s performance this show but because they are not top-4 material. Simple as that. How they chose one over the other, flip of a coin for all I care.
Had they chosen who to boot based on this show’s performance, then it was Sam all the way. Major screw-ups from concept to execution. Alas, history counts, it seems.
Yes, thanks for mentioning that point. I thought it was incredibly condescending and maybe I am seeing more of what Mia was going off about last week when she took a walk to ‘save’ Elia. Maybe the stress of this competition is wearing Cliff’s veneer off.
Ok but seriously, remember the episode where they did the party and Sam’s team won? And there’s Marcel at the judges’ table, and everyone is happy, except Marcel. Why? Because Sam was getting props and Marcel just could. not. let. it. go. He couldn’t be happy and celebrate the victory, he couldn’t have a moment of coolness with his team, instead he had to take a giant shit all over everything with his little speech. A giant pointless shit on it.
Why? Because he’s a socially-retarded, self-absorbed asshole. Forget team player, none of them is a team player. But Marcel? There’s a reason why people like that spend their lives in fear of wedgies. He’s not a nerd…Ilan’s a nerd, with his glasses and soft-spoken emo dude thing, whatever. Marcel’s just an obnoxious little jerk who probably got the living crap beat out of him on a daily basis and deserved it. Not every one who gets picked on is a victim, some of them deserve it and more. I can’t stand that kid. Nice rap on the roof though, Eminem better watch out.
Oh and, whatever, let’s let him stay after he serves undercooked chicken. What the fuck? Last time I checked failure to buy bread plates didn’t result in people potentially shitting blood from salmonella. Marcel should have been capped last night for that, as he was the only guy that could have gotten his restaurant closed by a health inspector/lawsuit.
I think Mike gave a good show and went down fighting, good for him. Cliff is emerging as my favorite. He’s a control freak and a dick but he’s got style and doesn’t need to rehash something two or three times before he gets the job done. I think he’s worn out with this show and the dramabombs and wants to get it over with and go home one way or the other…but he’s holding it together and is still a major contender. And Padma, as always, was the most delectable thing on the show. So hot, mrawr.
Yeah, that’s what I guessed, or something close to that anyway. Damn, I couldn’t stand that little pompous ass Marcel at first, but now I feel like running into the gym and stopping all the mean kids from picking on him. He’s full of himself and turned me off at first, but now I think he’s probably been picked on all his life for being different and developed that bravado as a defense.
Their treatment of him, even before we see what happens next week, is way out of proportion to anything he’s done to provoke them. I can’t stand it when people single out someone different or weaker to be their whipping boy and egg each other on to abuse him more and more. If that’s really what happens next week, I just hope someone gets their ass kicked literally or figuratively as a result.
I don’t get obnoxiousness from Marcel at all, or even arrogance. He’s just a geek. So he didn’t want the judges to think that he considered Sam to be his leader. So what? That’s not a tenth as obnoxious as all the crap that’s been heaped on him. And Ilan’s not a nerd. He’s a reptilian sociopath in the guise of a smug, urban hipster.
Marcel’s an annoying little douche but Ilan’s constant bitching about him is making me start to root for Marcel, even though since Day One I couldn’t stand him.
A nerd could make friends at a Star Trek convention. A geek could make friends at a hacker con. Marcel couldn’t do either one. He’s never had a friend, even the other nerds and geeks in the culinary world. This is because while he may be either or both of those things, he is also a pretentious asswipe. The closest thing to a friend he’s made on the show is Elia, who pities him the way she might pity a starving feral kitten with a missing ear that she found in the supermarket parking lot.
Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t join the mob. But I have no problem understanding why it’s there. I also find it interesting that while Mike and Cliff don’t seem interested in picking on Marcel, they don’t seem particularly surprised that he gets treated that way. Disappointed maybe, but surprised not at all.
I still think he’s passive-aggressive, and it’s just impossible to deal with those people. You can’t trust anything they say. Their words are meaningless drivel. They conduct relationship sabotage on almost a constant basis all the while oblivious to the fact that they’re doing so. You can’t rely on them. You can’t plan anything with them. You can’t organize anything with them. And they will gut you all the while with a clueless look on their face.
I was thinking the same p-a thing, but I really wasn’t sure if I understood exactly what it meant. If Marcel is p-a, then that’s pretty much what I thought it was.
Like the discounts at the supply store a few episodes ago. Instead of just stepping up and saying, “Look, guys, we aren’t supposed to take discounts” he yodels “I’m not taking any discount that you guys (the checkers) are offering me, not taking the discounts here, not going to be taking any discounts, no discounts for me, thanks”. That shit would drive me crazy, too.
I think the response from the others may seem out of proportion to what we see Marcel pull, but if he’s like that 24/7, then I can understand why he’s on almost everybody’s last nerve by now.
I didn’t get the outrage over that at all. All he did was decline a discount (as the rules required). Then Sam went ballistic on him simply because he didn’t want to cheat.
Well I found this listing of Passive Aggresive at Wikipedia. Marcel exhibits some of those traits, but not a lot, IMO. I think Ilan exhibits just as many.
Scenario A) Marcel (To All): Hey guys, the rules say we aren’t supposed to take discounts, I don’t want to put the team in jeopardy.
Scenario B) Marcel (Under his breath mostly, while checking out, in a yodeling tone): I’m not taking any discounts, no thank you, no discounts for me, nosiree bob, I’m not going to be taking any discounts, thanks anyway.
Now Scenario A would be a stand up thing to do, might actually garner some respect. “Hey, Marcel’s right! We’re not supposed to take discounts. Thanks, Marcel.”
Scenario B (the one actually employed by Marcel) makes him come off as a weasle dick. You can almost hear the gears turning in his head, “I’m gonna tell Colichio on you-ooo”.
Still just one instance, but something tells me there are many instances not captured on the camera that the other contestants have had to endure.
I don’t agree. 1) It wasn’t a team challenge; 2) Marcel did calmly mention that taking a discount was aginst the rules; and 3) These are adults and shouldn’t need Marcel to tell them not to break the rules.
BTW, Marcel was the one who offered to help Cliff in the color challenge
