TopChef 1/31

anyone?

I’ll just say that Ilan is the pettiest lamest mindjob ever on TV

Just look at the first 10 minutes of the show.

Trying hard not to spoil this. All I am going to say is that the Marcel haters stuck to their position until the very last minute. Marcel chose poorly. Still, the judges seem very ambivalent about the decision. 7 minutes to go.

Bravo is dead to me.

Ilan crowned. But I’m not feeling it. Something about these shows: they seem to winnow to “mediocrity plus.”

I think it’s a curse of the algorithm.

I’ve liked Sam and Ellia throughout the show, but they both showed what petty assholes they are tonight.
Seemed like Marcel’s dishes fell flat. His encapsulated whatever turned into a salad. His desert looked like a turd. He was more worried with whipping out some nick nack to impress Wiley Dufresne than cooking the “best meal of his life”. He lived by the gimmick and died by the gimmick.

He lost.
The judges go and tell all the reasons why Marcel should win. And then give it to Ilan. pft

I think Ilan and Marcel are both jackasses. IMHO, based on what I saw on the last episode, the wrong jackass won.

While Marcel may create a lot of jell dishes, jelling a team is beyond his capability and I feel this was his downfall. Mikey didn’t hurt, but didn’t create a plus either while Sam bailed Marcel’s butt out on the course missing the fish.

Elan, you may be a snively little b****rd, but tonight you and your team created the better meal and you are Top Chef. Congrats.

I have no idea why Marcel picked Mikey. I feel there were two other better choices available in Mia or even Frank.

 Your oppinion has nothing to do with what the judges said. What show did you watch? I don’t have the warm fuzzies for Marcel, but he is definately talented. Ilan, is talented also but he absolutely refuses to expand past the Spanish cuisine. Speaking of turds, Ilans beef dish looked like he used a graham cracker to scoop up a dog turd, then stuck a bone in it.

They all only said positive things about every dish and they liked his dessert at least as much as Ilan’s.

I got the distinct impression that Collicchio preferred Marcel and saw him as the more talented chef.

I t would have bugged me a lot less if Marcel had lost to Sam instead of Ilan. Sam at least showedd some ability to lead a kitchen, and it does look like he did his best to help Marcel in the finale and didn’t deliberately tank anything. Mikey, I’m not so sure about. He might have just been more inept and scattered than intentionally sabotaging, though.

I disagree. They ALL tanked his salad multiple times and could not understand why it was included as a course selection.

My dream ending for this show would have been a three way like they did last season between Sam, Cliff & Marcel. (before the hair incident happened). Or Sam, Cliff & Elia.

All three are good and it would have been great to watch them compete because they were all so competitive.

I hated so many of the people in this episode. Ilan is a smug putz. Marcel is obnoxious. Betty needs to tone down the facial expressions. Mike is a total flake. Elia should stop insulting food she hasn’t eaten.

I can’t think of a reality show where I wound up just despising so many of the participants.

It definitely seemed to me that Michael sabotaged Marcel. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that he accidentally on purpose left the fish behind. And to take pot shots at him in front of the judges was just mean. I don’t know why Marcel chose him anyway. It’s not like he’s some superb technician. That was a major error on Marcel’s part, and could very likely have contributed to his non-win. Also, wasn’t he watching when a previous contestant got offed because all he made was a salad?

That said, the point one of the judges made about him needing a few more years of seasoning was on target.

This was Marcel’s competition, he should have taken the time to make sure all of his ingredients were placed on the cart before it was wrapped. He has no one to blame but himself for that.

I thought the result was fair. Judging from the comments, Marcel was more cohesive, cutting edge and took more risks, but he also f’ed by trying to do those unproven sugar drop things resulting in putting out a plain salad, he forgot the fish and did not cover the fact well with the judges, and finally he appeared to be disorganized, panicky, and a poor leader during the last hour of prep. In contrast, Ilan took a safer route, but he executed his plan better and was a better leader. Using a football analogy, Marcel threw long on first down but missed, blitzed, but on the wrong down, and tried some trick plays that were not well practiced. Ilan, on the other hand, established a running game, threw a lot of first down routes, and controlled the ball and the clock. Sometimes sticking to conservative plan of doing what you know wins it all.

Personally, I thought they were both jackasses and not near as much a top chef as Elia or Sam.

I would be surprised - that requires a thought process that I have not seen in Michael. He does not seem that type. Plus, the man forgot his eggs at the beach when they were the center of his dish. He’s shown himself to be absent minded.

The problem with this finale is that two episodes ago, all but Marcel showed that they don’t have the maturity and judgment to be a “Top Chef” and through his inability to get along with anybody, Marcel has shown that he doesn’t have the leadership qualities and social skills of a “Top Chef.” So there’s no good choice, unless they can go back and say “Um, Suyai…any chance you’ve learned to flambe in the past 4 months?”

It was incredibly disappointing all around.

Even reality itself doesn’t phase the passive-aggressive personality. Marcel could not bring himself to congratulate his opponent. Or even recognize his humanity, for that matter — opting instead to grumble about being beaten by saffron and paprika. Good riddance to that whiny, self-absorbed, petulant little jerk with the Kitty Carlisle hairdo.

At least he did not attempt chicken.
