Anyone see the Top Gear episode where they drive through The South?
Sure…three months ago, when it aired.
I think you’re going to need a bit more than that to generate much new discussion.
First time I saw it. Did a search and didn’t see anything obvious on the first page. Do you have a link to the previous thread?
First showing in America tonight I think. I saw it, but actually it was really much more boring than I expected. The whole thing didn’t really seem to have any effort put into it.
- To buy a car for cheep you usually end up in seedy areas.
- Cheep cars have big problems.
- Driving around the south in the summer sucks without A/C
- Gas station food is disgusting wherever you are.
- If you try really hard to insult people and piss them off, they will get insulted and pissed off.
Can anyone tell me what was painted on the side of the cars? I could not make it out from the YouTube video.
First Baptist Church of Bagdad [sic] would be a fantastic name for a book or an arthouse movie.
Clarkson had “Country western is rubbish”.
May had "Hillary for president"and “Nascar sucks” on the trunk.
Hammond had “Man love is okay” in pink.
IIRC
And all the moreso if you have a visible camera crew.
I like what one of the YouTube commenters said- suggesting driving through parts of London with MANCHESTER UNITED SUCKS written on the car.
You can tell these guys don’t know the south though; if you REALLY wanted to piss them off, try blasphemy or ALLAH AKHBAR!, or better yet “Rednecks Suck Yankee Cock”.
I thought the appeal of the episode was that they took the cars most likely to be recognised as stereotypical US cars to someone from the UK.
The sports car with a detuned engine that could be outrun by a VW Golf, the beaten up pickup with little to no road manners and the big slob of a luxury sedan that wallows all over the road.
Strangers would wave cheerily as you drove past, other drivers would be unusually polite, you could park anywhere without getting a ticket…
Just don’t try it in Surrey though
Heh, that was my first thought
To be honest, I can’t think of much you could put on a car in the UK that would cause a similar level of offence… maybe something about paedos while driving round a council estate, but that’s about it.
You could attack:
- the queen
- the church
- any football team
- music
- politicians
and you’d more than likely get a cheer from 50% of the locals.
How about “British people are morons”, which corresponds more closely to what the Top Gear slogans were implying.
I thought the litigation threatened by the Katrina charity at the end was awful. Did they show that?
If it was true…
…and I can’t think of anything to write on a car to get much of a reaction in Britain, either, except Rangers/Celtic stuff in Glasgow. Or maybe ‘Behead those who insult Islam’?
I’m still not convinced they got that much of a reaction in Alabama either. One lady giving them the bird and a lot of shaky camera work, ISTR. Of course, they made out that they were about to be lynched.
Honestly, I think most people would shrug, or think “wanker”, and shrug.
Yep, remember that in the past they’ve made out that they set a carwash on fire and ran away, too.
Or drive through Tuscaloosa with “Nick Saban isn’t God!”
Yeah, I didn’t like that part of the episode too much. Though I did like the gist of the episode. I can’t watch the video at work, but I love the part where they disable the AC in Captain Slow’s car, and I just like the idea of making those cars work for them.
They burned up that caravan last year and later admitted it was a stunt. It’s not all that hard to tell, they stage everything in just the sort of conveniently comedic setup that allows it to look like a stunt, all carefully planned for the camera. That’s why part of me of me isn’t sure about the near-lynching in the Alabama episode. Could very well have been real … the cameras were flying all over the place, video was blacked out, and you could hear rocks hitting the cars and actual stress in their voices as they ran away.
Then again, they could’ve handed the rednecks a fiver each and told them to throw rocks at the cars, so who knows.
