Top movie of the decade?

Forgot about a big one!

2018:

A Star is Born

12 years a slave
the VVitch
Birdman
Wolf of wall street
Django unchained
interstellar
Dark Knight rises
Logan (excellent ending to the series)
Mudbound
A ghost story
It follows

I’ve read these lists (and the baffling AV Club Top 100, which his barely one spot), and pretty much never connect with most of the choices. Always kind of strange, really, to see other’s judgement on such a period of time, and not have anything like the same answers. I guess my criteria would be “Would I watch it a third time?” and most peoples choices on here are a definite “No”. Seen most of them, appreciated a lot of them, wouldn’t sit down to watch more than a scene or two if they were showing on advertless TV.

I’ve not tracked most of the movies over the last ten years, but I’ve got a rental list where I can pick out what is best of, and what was “interesting” (memorable, different)

Best of

Cabin in the Woods
It Follows
Lego the movie
Thor 3
Searching For Sugarman
Spiderman into the Spiderverse
Train to Busan
Your Name
Hounds of Love
A Quiet Place
Bad Times at El Royale
Us

Memorable

Compliance
Behind the Candelabra
Occulus
Hunt for wilderpeople
The Iceman
The Bridge
Machette Kills
Absentia
Green Room
Popstar: Never stop stopping
Don’t breathe
Sightseers
The autopsy of Jane Doe
Hereditary
Deadpool 2
Pet
Booksmart
Unsane

I don’t usually rank movies, it’s so hard to really say why one is better than another. Also I don’t watch enough of them to make a fair judgement of where they should stand. A good two thirds of the films you have all listed so far I have no interest in ever watching.

Anyway, here’s a list of some I liked or have rewatched most frequently.

Tangled
Dredd
Edge Of Tomorrow
Rogue One (I liked all the Star Wars movies very much)
Dunkirk
Bumblebee
The Lego Movie
Zootopia
Hunt For The Wilderpeople
Chef
Paddington 1 and 2
Most of Marvel

Looked at the AV Club Top 100 (yeah lists, I know…) and the only movie I’d add is Christian Petzold’s Transit, which is not even on that list and currently the least popular of Petzold’s three great films this decade. In any case, we’re always decades away from a consensus on the last one, nobody will have seen enough films and those who’ll claim they’ve seen an entire Top *** list are way too influenceable.

I mean even critics who see a boatload of films are just starting to realize After Hours (1985) is the greatest movie ever made and will never be topped, and that was 35 years ago!

My favorite film of each year from 2010-2018

Winter’s Bone
The Tree of Life
Moonrise Kingdom
Upstream Color
Timbuktu
Mustang
Moonlight
Personal Shopper
Blindspotting

I’ve enjoyed a lot of the movies that have already been listed, but of those the only one really in contention for me is Fury Road. There are probably others that were released in the past 10 years that would compete, but nothing comes to mind at the moment.

Others I really enjoyed:
Get Out
The Big Short
Spotlight
The Martian
Room
Moneyball
The Social Network
Ex Machina
Logan
Looper

Not sure if I’d stand behind these as “great” films, but they’re the ones which had the biggest impact on me. In no particular order (except the first):

Get Out
Hereditary
What We Do in the Shadows
It Follows
Dunkirk
Hell or High Water
Room
Don’t Breathe
Revenge
(2017, directed by Coralie Fargeat)

Doesn’t quite make my list, but *Mandy *is a wild ride with some amazing imagery.

Would also add “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” to the list.

Seriously underrated movie, probably in my top 3 of the decade.

Also, the first Guardians of the Galaxy is my favorite MCU movie. I’d put it up there.
