Torchlight

I’ve got 1.12 or 1.13.

Alright, you sons of bitches have got me playing this, too. So far, I’m really liking it. I think they could use some clarification on how dual-wielding works, though - I went looking through their forums, and found a post by one of the devs saying they weren’t even sure anymore how things stacked. Yeesh. Anyways, as far as I can tell, the only benefits from dual-wielding are the dual-wielding skill and getting two item’s bonuses. And you get the bonus even if you’re wielding a sword and a pistol. Which is weird. Also, I think it’s a little silly that my strength-pumping melee character still does more damage with a brace of pistols.

I am confused by how it works too. Are you saying that dual-wielding works like this:

  1. Take the bonuses from second weapon and add it to the first.
  2. Then apply the bonus from the dual-wielding skill.
  3. Resolve combat using this virtual super weapon.

Is that how it works?

I played the demo today and actually ended up buying it with 40 minutes of free “demo” time left. Fun little game but it is a little too easy on the normal difficulty.

It looks interesting, but I’m somewhat disappointed at the lack of multiplayer support, as well as(though I’m not surprised) the lack of wasd movement control.

Pretty much. I’m not sure how base damage or attack speed is figured out, or where in the process the skill damage bonus fits in. But, I’ve got one weapon with a life-stealing bonus, and I get it every time I attack, regardless of which hand it shows hitting. On the other hand, I attack just as often with two weapons as with one, so you don’t get more attacks by dual-wielding. It kind of diminishes the difference between weapon-and-shield, two-handed-weapon, and dual-wielding.

This game needs a manual badly.

Thanks runcible spoon; that helps a lot. I installed a mod that creates a pair of practice dummies to experiment with weapon configurations.

One cool feature that I finally noticed is the Journal page. It has a lot of cool runtime stats for your player (how many chests you’ve opend, number of steps you have taken, levels explored, etc.).

I started using all of the fish that I have caught. I fed one to my dog in the middle of battle and then forgot about it. At the end of the battle, while picking up loot, I noticed that I had triggered a mimic (the treasure chest monster). I kept chasing it around, trying to kill it, and wondering why I couldn’t hit it. It wasn’t until I noticed my dog was gone that I figured out that the fish I gave her turned her into the mimic.

I also fed her a tunnelfish and turned her into one of those monsters that shot off a ton of lightning. However, after the 120 seconds were up, she didn’t change back. She was permanently stuck as the monster – even on the saved game page.

Just got the game yesterday, it’s ridiculously fun. Has anyone found any pistols faster than average attack speed or is that the best you can get? I want to dual wield pistols John Woo-style but I’ve only found one average attack pistol and using a slow pistol with it makes both shoot at slow. I wish the rifles weren’t so huge, I feel kind of silly using them. They’re also damn slow.

Glad to know I’m not the only one with hotkey problems, I was afraid it was my laptop. As for permanently changing your pet, I’ve had that happen too. If you feed them something else then after the duration is over they’ll be back to normal. You can also feed them dogfish and catfish to make them change species permanently but I think when they do a temporary transformation they still revert back to original, the species change is basically another transformation but one with no duration.

I’m in the lower 30s but I’ve only seen one yellow texted pistol. So I’m not sure how well that will go for you. but you can give it a try.

You sure it’s the 120 seconds one? There’s a one hour one which is as good as permanent.

I am not sure at all; I played it at random. I didn’t realize there was a 1 hour version and just assumed it was the 2 minute version. Thanks for pointing that out.

I didn’t realize that Set items were not fixed. I’ve found duplicates of the same items, but with different stats. One pair even differed between Normal and Epic.

Anyone using any mods? I have a few installed: I have the stash mod, not so much for the extra space, but for the convenience of a stash near the transmuter. I also use the practice dummy mod and I loaded the Bee Shooting mod, but I haven’t gotten the spell yet.

I think the Enchanting is better balanced in the patches, but my original character is still unbalanced. I don’t find any items that can beat my currently equipped (and extensively enchanted) items.

I also saw a mod with Ancient items. The description indicated that there are really no items for characters in the 75 level range. My character is level 69 and this seems to be true. My weapon damage has been leveling off.

Really happy to see a game made with Ogre3D getting so much attention. I had to use it for a job of my own recently, and was blown away by what a well-managed open source project can achieve. Not to mention how amazingly helpful people can be; for a guy giving his time freely, Sinbad (the Ogre3D lead) is implausibly generous with his assistance on the forums.

Fun little game, too, although I did find I was into a rut by about the half way point. Stock up on identify scrolls, head back to waypoint, spam slash attacks and pick up loot until scrolls run out, warp back. Lather, rinse, repeat. Replaying with a shooter to see if it’s a bit more varied…

Well, I just found out the answer to my own question. Yes, there are fast pistols, I just bought two fastest attack handguns. They look cool but actually using them isn’t as awesome as I thought. I still have to run and gun when a giant horde of monsters come after me the same as when I use a rifle. I’m starting to think pistol and sword is a better combo, that way I automatically start hacking if anyone gets too close. I might be able to actually stand my ground with a good melee weapon in the off hand.

But I have to admit, it looked pretty cool when a bunch of skeletons came after me and I faced them with guns blazing in each hand, it looked like something from Pirates of the Caribbean.

So I’ve been playing for a while now and have formed some random opinions.

I can’t believe Blizzard hasn’t sued these dudes because this is exactly like Diablo 2.

The game is fun but the drops aren’t very exciting so far. I’m level 20 and my gear isn’t really impressive.

I chose the alchemist because I like the necro on D2 and I like minions. The problem is that the skill tree isn’t very exciting. Basically imps and a golem. I wish they would add a minion counter so I knew how many were still alive because it is really hard to tell in the heat of battle.

I pretty much spam the Ice Grenade for the most part and wipe everyone out. There doesn’t seem to be any reason to use other spells.

I do like that I can stick spells on my pet and he will cast them. I stuck Skeleton Archers on him and whenever I get in a fight he casts them, and I have 4 imps and a Golem then I turn on the pet thorns or whatever it’s called. Makes short work of them.

All in all it’s a fun game for $20 but I wish the gear was more varied. I like the gambling aspect of the enchanter. I threw the same item in 4 times and it kept getting boosted then it got totally wiped out.

D2 itself is part of a long lineage of “roguelike” games with similar basic premise and mechanics; a lawsuit wouldn’t have much standing.

And there are other games that are even more similar to D2, like Titan Quest, which copy not just the core mechanics but much of the look and feel. I get the impression that Blizzard isn’t interested in giving someone else free publicity through a lawsuit.

And they make so much money from WoW that they’re lighting their imported Cuban cigars with hundred-dollar bills anyway.

Ahahaha, that’s rich.

Blizzard would have to be assholes of an unrivaled scale to consider suing Runic over similarities to Diablo, considering that, while they can’t exactly advertise it in the game title, Torchlight is made and led by the same designers* who founded Blizzard North, the team that crafted Diablo I and II so many years ago.

And, as has been pointed out, this isn’t exactly the first Diablo-like (hi there Titan Quest, Fate, Dungeon Siege, Sacred, etc.) and definitely not the first roguelike, if you want to consider Diablo a part of that genre. Randomized dungeons and drops have been going on since the early 80s.
Now that that’s said, I have to say that while I jumped on the opportunity to buy Torchlight (and thus fund their massive multiplayer effort), I haven’t played a lot of it, tho not for lack of desire. Between work and trying to finish Assassin’s Creed andNew Super Mario Bros. - I haven’t had much time for those games I own which could conceivably go on for many, many hundreds of hours.

  • This post contains shameless self-promotion <3

See, I found Titan Quest to be a great game and I think it had it’s own unique look and feel compared to D2. In fact, I was very surpised the TQ didn’t really take off because it was a really good game.

Torchlight is fun but the drops just don’t seem varied enough for me to play this single player for an incredibly long time.

Well, that and because Blizzard’s entire business model has been based on taking what someone else was already doing and then doing it better.

Ahh TQ. TQ misses a few moments to be awesome - the front part of the game takes too slow to be exciting and some classes have the opportunity to be ultimate boring to play - combat + defense, for example. The difficulty is also brutal if you don’t mix and match the classes well.
