Torchlight

It is not unheard of to sue someone for mimicking their own work. Presumably Blizzard has rights to the concepts, art, and sounds that came out of Blizzard North.

That said, I agree that a lawsuit looks unlikely for many of the other reasons you stated.

Torchlight has been half price on Steam this weekend. Judging by how late I was able to purchase my last sale item, the price on Torchlight should be good for about another 12 hours.

The Torchlight sale will last through January 3rd. The only deals that are temporary are the ones listed under “Special Deals for Today Only!”, currently the GTA 4/stalker/mirror’s edge/defense grid/ operation flashpoint ones.

I’m thinking about getting this game, but I just started Titan Quest and I’m not sure how many D2 clones I need.

The sale had been promoted as a weekend-only deal. Maybe they decided to extend it in honor of the developer adding Steam achievements?

I think there was a sale previous to the current one which you may be thinking of. Currently the steam front page says “Premier deals through January 3rd” and “Great deals throughout the store - up to 80% off through January 3rd!” so it would be kind of a dick move if only that sale ended prematurely.

Looks like in addition to being half off every day until January third, it’s actually 75% for today only. You have about 20 more hours in which you can get the game for $5 on steam.

I asked the question in the other thread, but I’ll ask it here: I already have Titan Quest + Expansion. I haven’t played it much, but these seem like very similar games, and I probably won’t want to play both, so which is better?

I remember reading an interview with a (former?) designer from Iron Lore (who did TQ), and he said the game was heavily pirated, and some of the pirates ran into problems running the game that legit players didn’t. The game was then badmouthed because of these problems, and between that and the piracy, sank like a stone. THQ didn’t make enough money on it to consider doing a sequel.

2 quick questions:

Is there a key you can press to ensure that you run to melee range to attack something when you’re dual wielding a melee and ranged weapon? Sort of the opposite of hitting shift? I’m using the sword/pistol because it’s awesome, but sometimes it’s hard to get into range for melee when I want to - if there’s a group to attack I can’t always click to move (it may fire at someone else in the group who just moved to where I clicked) or sometimes I click on something from about 2 feet away and it’s just far enough that it triggers my pistol instead of sword.

And 2, is there a quest I’m supposed to be doing with this Brink guy that I was supposed to watch over? His quest log doesn’t indicate any specific objective, and I’m now 2 floors lower than where I picked him up, and he’s hitting everything with glancing blows and he’s not very useful.

I considered spoilering this, but instead I’ll be vague: Just keep going. I don’t think he can be killed, so you don’t need to actively “watch over” him.

Yeah, I found the solution on the next floor, thanks.

I just got this game, and I have to say that at $5, it was a really really really good deal!

It’s got the whole Diablo 2 vibe, which I really like, but some things I could have done without, like identify scrolls. I mean, seriously. Is there any point when everyone identifies everything anyway?

This game lost me a couple of weeks ago. The drops just weren’t exciting and never seemed to give me any really cool skills/boosts. Being stuck in single player makes it not as fun.

It’s a good game for the price, especially if you got it for only $5, but it definitely needed better loot tables. Which is weird because alot of the reviews mention that they got the loot tables right.

Torchlight has a free editor available and here’s a site with mods. Haven’t tried any yet.

I have been using a few mods and I have created a few of my own. There are some nice convenience ones: extra stashes, additional vendors in town, ability to stack potions and scrolls beyond 20.

The bee spell mod mentioned up-thread is a pretty cool one.

The spell vendor mod is nice if you want an identify or town portal scroll, but cannot find them.

Is there a way to bind more than 10 skills/spells/pots in this game? I have more of that stuff than I have keys for… and yeah, you can make f1-f2-f3 change what your right click does, but it’s really annoying to hit f2-right click f3-right click f4-right click to buff yourself every 30 seconds and then f1 again to go back to the attack you want to use with the right mouse button.

I just picked this up for a decent deal - $10 I think? Hard to remember - I’ve been scooping up games like mad lately.

Anybody know whether there’s a way to change difficulty mid-game? I’ve been having loads of fun but I’d like to up it to Hard.

This is a tool to do it.

You can also change from the command-line. From inside the game, type a tilde (shift-`), then enter

where n is 0 through 3 with 0 being easy and 3 being very hard.

Sadly, I’m getting a bit bored with the game now, but I can’t pinpoint why, especially when Diablo II stole months of my life. The game feels… I dunno, mushy? I really can’t pin point it, which is a pity, since I really did want to like this game…

I think I know how you feel, Tabby_Cat. I got bored with Torchlight fairly quickly. It was so cheap that I definitely got my money’s worth, so I don’t feel like I wasted my money. But it’s very repetitive, in a way that even a click-fest like Diablo II never was.

I can’t really put my finger on it either. Maybe it’s the layout of the dungeons? Diablo (I and II) had more open areas here and there where things could run at you from off the screen without having to go through a chokepoint (such as a stairway). That added a bit to the fun. Torchlight feels cramped for some strange reason. Maybe the monsters are just too big. I dunno.

So I came back to torchlight again after putting it down for a few months, and remembered why I stopped. Once you get to a higher level, the interface limitations of 10 action buttons is far too limiting. You get 10 buttons plus the weird right click/function key interface, and that’s just not enough for all the skills you want to use. I have abilities that I’d like to use but simply can’t because hitting f3 right click f2 right click is just too awkward. Are there any sort of mods that allow you to create more command buttons and bind keys to them?
