Cool. I thought the 5 episode miniseries was OK, but glad to see it back for a more regular season.
Moving from BBC America to Starz in the US, by the way.

Here’s hoping they at least keep it dark.
Well, some darkness is fine, but I won’t be watching if they don’t lighten it up a bit after Children of Earth.
The press release says it will be a Starz BBC co-production. I wonder if that reflects some creative control or just ponying up a large amount of cash.
Despite what the press release says, I think it was a given that Torchwood would be back in some form. The creator and star were eager for it to continue, and the latest installment was successful enough for the BBC to want it to continue. The uncertainty was as to when and how. Rupert Davies tried to make a deal with FOX, but that fell through recently. The BBC alone might not have been able or willing to fund it to the extent that Davies wanted. U.S. network involvement gives him greater resources to play with.
The release says the new season will have “a more international scope.” That could be seen as a compromise to get Starz on board, but I think it could well help the series. The ongoing battle to defend the earth shouldn’t be confined entirely to Cardiff after all.
Uh oh. “International scope” casting probably means more Americans. Ew, that ain’t why I watch British TV. Plus they already killed off all the characters I cared about, the basts! Sob.
I assumed that “international scope” means that there might be scenes set outside Cardiff. Also, perhaps the effects budget will be larger. I’m just disappointed that we have to wait a year to see the next series.
I’ll tolerate one American added to the main cast, but that’s it’s it. I’d also be game for a two-parter were the team visit’s the States. S/he can be the new audience surrogate. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle things like reestablishing Torchwood, Jack’s return, and how Gwen & Rhys are dealing with parenthood (my WAG is that Rhys becomes a stay-at-home dad).
Fucking hell. It’s like they *want * to make people torrent it.
Russell T. Davies? Rupert Murdoch?
Teleportation accident. You’d think if anyone would be able to broker a deal between FOX and the BBC…
Aren’t all the characters dead except Gwen and Jack?
First they were going to make an American version of Torchwood. That made me shudder.
Now it’s a co-production. That sounds better I suppose. More money. More likely to be canceled over money. These days, it doesn’t imply more American actors. It implies more Canadian actors.
The American version was going to all but erase any other-sexuality. I wonder how far the Americans will go inning Captain Jack?
Or now that it will be on Starz, they could take it even further the *other *way. (see: Spartacus.)
I don’t know much about Starz or the Spartacus you mention. Fill me in, briefly?
Outstanding!
If it’s only going to be shown on Starz in the US then I won’t be able to watch it unless I’m willing to upgrade my DirecTV package, which I really can’t afford. I am not amused.
Spartacus: Blood & Sand is a Starz original series that aired earlier this year. Extremely violent & extremely sexual. Think *300 *plus graphic sex (both gay & hetero), nudity (male & female) and cursing. (“Cock” being said almost every other word.)
So… Torchwood could be interesting on Starz!
I doubt it’s worth watching anymore. Nearly all the cast is dead. Hell, even Captain Jack died several times. He just won’t stay dead.
I don’t think a relaunch with Jack will work. I lost track. Is there any other original characters still alive?
Just Gwen.
Starz sounded weird at first, but given the content of the show, premium does make more sense than basic cable (or whatever tier it is BBCA is on). At the very least, it makes it likely that there won’t be edits (either for content or for commercial breaks) to the US airings.
Maybe Suzie will come back. Again.
Maybe they’re going to franchise “Torchwood”, like the US did “CSI”, “Law and Order”, and “NCIS”. They did establish that there were several Torchwood bases. Perhaps “Torchwood: Bahamas” or “Torchwood: Falkland Islands”?
It would make sense for Queen Victoria to establish multiple Torchwoods throughout the British Empire. Edinburgh & Cardiff had outposts (Dublin probally had one at some point; it would’be been closed after the War of Independence). Torchwood: Down Under is a possiblity.
