Torino 2006: Closing Ceremonies

I believe he said ‘Torino Passion Lives’. A friend in Italy wrote and said she didn’t even know what he said, so there wasn’t much ado about it there. it must be a common occurence there.

Interesting note, when the woman came out to douse the flame, Isolde Kostner, not mentioned (I think) on NBC was the fact she was pregnant. All I heard was they just said she ‘retired last month’. Some Italians got mad and said she should have waited. I was wondering why someone would retire 1 month before the games in her hometown.

So there was an intruder? Either I wasn’t paying attention when it happened (as I said, I couldn’t get into some of the show), or CBC missed it.

The Olympics are still on a 4 year cycle. Next winter games - 2010. Last summer games 2004, next summer games 2008.
Of course, the summer and winter games used to happen in the same year, but that ended in 1992. The games were in Albertville, France and then in 1994 Lillehammer, Norway. The way it is now, there is only a 2 year wait between Olympics, but still a 4 year wait between winter or summer games. That may be one of the smartest things they’ve done.

while the italian olympic guy was giving his speech, a guy ran up to the mike next to him, riped his jacket off exposing his “golden palace dot com” shirt. yelled something into the mike and was taken from the stage by security.

the italian olympic guy just looked over at him and went on with his remarks.

One of those GoldenPalace.com streakers got into the Curling arena, too. I can’t remember where I saw the photo, but it was a naked dude with the GP name on his chest and he was holding a rubber chicken over his privates. I guess they were able to cut that from the broadcast.

And I agree, Mama Rose, there should be a 24-hour Curling Channel. Definitely.

Yeah, I knew all that. What I meant was that I wish the entire Olympics would go back to a four-year cycle the way it used to be, with summer and winter in the same year. It was a long wait, and helped to justify the year-long hype leading up to the big event. Now, it’s just another Barbara Walters special, with extravagant and meaningless opening ceremonies designed after Superbowl halftimes. It’s like a comet that comes every night. Yawn, there it is again.

I hadn’t watched any of the Winter Olympics, but was over at my parents’ on Sunday and they wanted to see the closing ceremony. So there we are, talking about how NBC has had such abysmal viewership numbers…

and we get, not Olympics, but something from the History Channel with the added bonus of Tom Brokaw slurring his narration.

It was an interesting story and all, but not exactly the Winter Olympics, ya know?

Then they announced Avril Lavigne and Ricky Martin coming up, and I fled.
