Torino 2006 Opening Ceremonies

It’s still a half-hour or so until the Opening Ceremonies in Torino, but I’m liking the preceding segments. There was a travelogue on Torino that really makes me want to go there. I’ve only been to Italy once, and I only went to Milano, Firenze and Venecia. Great country, and great people. I’ve got to get back there one day.

Interviews are on now. Not quite as interesting to me. But then, I’m on the computer so I’m not paying as much attention as I should.

Flames coming out of their heads. how cool is that?

Now there are some guys playing Alpenhorns. As soon as I saw them I wanted to call, ‘Riiiiii-co-laaaaaa!’ 14 years since the last time the Olympics were held in the Alps, at Albertville. I should find my sweatshirt or mug.

Cow Waltz!!!

You wathing this on CBC? It’s not on NBC

I think we’re neighbours. I’m just a couple of miles south of the end of the 5.

That Cow Waltz was pretty wacky.

White Rock.

Hm. Not really into the Canadian costumes. i wonder where my Roots beret is?

Aw, no Jamaican bobsled team this year. :frowning:

The U.S. hats look like a cross between a pillbox and a campaign hat. I kinda dig the South African slouch hats.

I love the Parade Of Nations. And not just for the hot chix! It’s wonderful to see the people of so many nations gathered together in one place.

I always get all emotional during the parade of nations.

Of course, I won’t even get to see my tape of NBC’s crappy coverage of it until at least tomorrow afternoon due to having to work tonight and tomorrow morning.

I’m totally jealous of you people.

HBC (The Bay) outbid them for the rights.

I was distracted by a phone call from my partner about how to reorganise the studio, but it looks like the Olympic Flame was lit by…

Stefania Belmondo

Impressive fireworks, but I didn’t find it quite as dramatic as previous lightings.

And now… Luciano Pavarati!

The british were fabulous! Those suits!

I loved the torch lighting…thought it was very cool, especially the last engulfing flame that finally lit the top. Very neat. Good ceremony overall, and a fabulous ending.

No, I meant my Roots beret. It’s around here somewhere.

Yes, that was good.

I liked the animated ski jumper right before the parade of nations. Very nicely done. Great fireworks. And Pavarotti was awesome.

I have a question/plea for information for those who have already seen the Opening Ceremonies, or to those who will see it in prime time this evening.

My husband is out of town on business. My brother-in-law heard that Peter Gabriel performs and I assume his information is reliable. We want to record his performance in High Definition, which we can do via a computer setup with a program called HiPix. It’s a great little program that not only allows us to record HD off broadcast TV (it won’t do cable/satellite), but has a timer that you can set in advance according to channel, time and length.
Could someone tell me approximately when Peter Gabriel performs? Within the first hour? Second hour? After the Parade of Nations? I just need a general idea.
We have 2 problems with getting the broadcast directly. 1) I’m leaving to see two movies tonight and won’t get back until after midnight, so I’ll miss the original broadcast (NBC is repeating the OC once, starting immediately after the first showing ends). I already plan to Tivo the whole thing, but we don’t have an High Definition Tivo, so have to get it in HD via the computer. 2) We don’t have enough hard drive space for the whole 4 hours of the Opening Ceremonies or else I’d just set the HiPix timer to get the whole thing and forget about it.

If I know approximately when he’s on, I can set the HiPix program’s timer to get just that general time frame (I have enough hard drive space for 100 minutes), and then my husband can edit it down later. I can do that with the repeat broadcast after I get home from the movies, so as long as I know before the repeat starts, I can set the timer then go to bed. Otherwise I’ll have to drop some NoDoze and stay up. I’ll do that, if no one answers this, but it never hurts to ask, right?

Desperately hoping that made sense…

I got preoccupied when Yoko Ono came out, but I believe he appeared in the post-Parade Of Nations show. I used to listen to Peter Gabriel in the '80s. There was this older bald guy singing, and I thought ‘Is that Peter Gabriel?’ But as I said, I was distracted. (Trading emails.)

Anybody in the US having a problem with this? Is it because they’re broadcasting in HD and I don’t have HD. All the skiers have a white halo around them on my TV and the background is just white mash. I’ve adjusted the brightness, contrast and hue on my Sony TV but the picture still sucks :frowning: Any advice?

I was watching it in HD, but switched to standard definition and no problems for me. Simulcasting it in HD doesn’t create any problems (most of the primetime shows are simulcast in HD).
