I think you made the right choice also. Good luck and go out and splurge on something that you totally don’t need with part of your new salary.

Congrats. What an amazing story and a fantastic outcome. I would have made the same choice as you - fewer hours, better position!
However, the money part I would make sure I get in writing. “They also promised they would even try to look in the budget to increase the pay in late spring.” IME, nowhere near good enough.
My aunt experienced a similar situation working as a PA at a big ad agency: her boss was a drunk and she basically ran the entire account management department for several years; when the board found out, she got a directorship and he got the bullet.
