Inspired by the thread Screwed By the Academy I got to thinking about films or performances that didn’t win Oscars not because they were screwed but because they occurred in a tough year. The best example I can think of is Chinatown, probably one of the top 10 movies of all time. Yet it had the misfortune of going up against The Godfather II, which is in many folks top 3 (some even have it number 1). So it is hard to say it was screwed, yet it probably wins in almost any other year. Heck, The Conversation was also nominated and it probably could have won in most years.
