40 Years of Oscar (how many have you seen?)

As I watched the Academy Awards last night, I realized that I’d only seen one of the films nominated for best picture (No Country for Old Men). This got me to wondering how many Academy Award nominated pictures I’ve seen over the years. I went to a Wikipedia entry that listed all of them, and realized I’d never even heard of some of the earlier nominees. Since we now have 80 years of this stuff in the books, I thought I’d go through and see how many of the them I’ve actually watched. Usually there’s some better stuff nominated than has actually won (and usually more than a few better films that don’t even get a nomination).

Here’s a list of all nominees of the last 40 years, an arbitrary number, to be sure, but probably within the memory of enough folks here to make it interesting.

(more to follow)

Given this subset of the Academy Award nominated films, I’d like to discuss:

  • How many of these have you seen? Do you notice any trends?
  • What are some of the best nominees out there that didn’t win?
  • Which Oscar wins surprised you the most, given the quality of the other nominees?
  • What are some of the best films that didn’t even get a nod?
  • Which of these best stands the test of time? Which don’t?
  • Anything else along these lines.

Note:

Tender Mercies

was also nominated in 1983. It got chopped off in the edit. My apologies to Robert Duvall.

I’ve seen 25. That’s actually more than I was expecting. I don’t see many movies. I kept a tally last night when they went through the list of the ones that had won (from all 80 years), and I’ve seen… six. (Gone with the Wind, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Amadeus, Titanic, and Return of the King.)

Completely not qualified to answer the rest of the questions, so I won’t. :o

Of the 200 movies listed, I’ve seen (or recall seeing, left out ones that I have only a hazy recollection or only saw bits and pieces) 131.

I’ve seen 33 of the 40 winners, which surprised me a bit.

I’ve not seen any of the nominated movies from 1980, which was the year I graduated from High School. Not sure exactly why, most likely none of those really interests me enough to go back and watch them. I’d probably like Raging Bull and maybe Elephant Man from that year.

I’ve never seen (all of) Patton (1970) or Titanic (1997), even though I’ve seen all of the other nominated movies in those years. I was kind of young to see Patton in the theater, and never got around to watching it. Titanic just doesn’t really interest me enough to sit through a film that long, especially since I know how it ends.

I’ve seen all of the nominees and winners only from 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1999, 2000, 2003.

I have seen 141 of the 200 movies:

Basically, my movie going has fallen off in the last few years. From 1986 to 1996 I probably saw 50 films per year at the theater. Often on discount tickets through the Navy or at $2.00 theaters, but I saw a ridiculous number. Now I am lucky if I see a dozen and they are mostly kid’s movies.

  • How many of these have you seen? Do you notice any trends?
I have seen 148 of the nominated films. That verges on scary.

  • What are some of the best nominees out there that didn’t win?
Apocalypse Now stands out. Please see my comments for more of my opinions.

  • Which Oscar wins surprised you the most, given the quality of the other nominees?
The fact that in 1998, “Shakespeare in Love” beat “Saving Private Ryan” and “Elizabeth”. I will never understand this win.

  • What are some of the best films that didn’t even get a nod?
I never really thought about this.
“My Favorite Year” comes to mind. This was an Oscar worthy film. It should have been nominated.
Others I love that I understand not being nominated are everything from Animal House and Star Trek IV to Local Hero. Great movies, but not Oscar movies.

  • Which of these best stands the test of time? Which don’t?
The Godfather & Godfather part II, Patton, The Sting. It helps that they are all period pieces. It is films like “The Graduate” and “Midnight Cowboy” that do not hold up as well.

The non-period piece that has really held up is Rocky. This is still a great movie.
IMHO, it is tough to take any movie under 20 and determine if it has stood the test of time.

Jim

  • Do you notice any trends? For some reason, I missed a lot of Warren Beatty’s work.
  • What are some of the best nominees out there that didn’t win? Brokeback Mountain, Star Wars
  • Which Oscar wins surprised you the most, given the quality of the other nominees? Rocky winning over its 1976 competition.
  • What are some of the best films that didn’t even get a nod? Don’t know.
  • Which of these best stands the test of time? Which don’t? Stands: GF1 and 2, Amadeus, Silence, Schindler’s List, Unforgiven. Doesn’t Stand: Rain Man, Driving Miss Daisy, Dances with Wolves, Kramer vs. Kramer.

I’ve seen 86. I’m shocked that it’s that few - we watch a lot of movies! A lot of movies!

Interestingly, I’d seen more and more the closer we got to the present, until a few years ago when my viewership dropped off sharply. Partly because the nominees have sucked of late and partly because, post-Netflix, we never see hardly anything in the theater. So I run a little behind.

What stands the test of time? Rocky, The Remains of the Day, The Godfather, Unforgiven, Chinatown, The Conversation, The Right Stuff… a lot of the others I haven’t seen recently enough to tell you.

Make that 142. I just saw the “Tender Mercies” correction on post 3.

I’ve seen 69 of the movies on the list. Skewed towards the 90s and 00s, unsurprisingly (I’m 25). In fact, from the period before the 90s, I’d seen about 20 of the movies on the list. The only year when I saw all five best picture nominees was 2004 (of which Sideways and Finding Neverland were my favorites – I wasn’t the biggest fan of Million Dollar Baby).

I did notice last night that the 60s were a very good decade for musicals – four Best Picture winners were musicals (West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Sound of Music, Oliver), and several more were nominated.

I’ve seen 182 of the ones you listed, including all the nominees back through 1996, when I saw all the small/indie films, but missed the big one, Jerry Maguire. I also saw all the nominees from '74 to '83. There are a lot of other biggies I missed. These are the movies I haven’t seen. Some of the big names are really shocking to me:

Winner: 1968 Oliver!
o The Lion in Winter
o Sounder
Winner: 1986 (59th) Platoon
o The Mission
o Mississippi Burning
o Born on the Fourth of July
o Field of Dreams
o Beauty and the Beast
o JFK
Winner: 1992 Unforgiven
o A Few Good Men
o Howards End
Winner: 1993 (66th) Schindler’s List
o In the Name of the Father
o The Piano
o The Remains of the Day
Winner: 1995 Braveheart
o Jerry Maguire

I suppose the pattern is that I didn’t go out to the movies very much in the early-mid 1990’s.

Best, hard to say since it’s so subjective, but perhaps All the President’s Men or Taxi Driver over Rocky, Apocalypse Now over Kramer vs. Kramer, The Elephant Man or Raging Bull over Ordinary People, Reds over Chariots of Fire, The Right Stuff over Terms of Endearment, Goodfellas over Dances with Wolves, Moulin Rouge! or Fellowship of the Ring over A Beautiful Mind, Brokeback Mountain or Munich over Crash, and, of course, There Will Be Blood over No Country For Old Men (though I am thrilled for the Coens and it’s not an egregious loss). The rest of the winners I have no problem with, even if I might have preferred other films in the nominee list (such as LA Confidential, my favorite movie of that year, over Titanic, but Titanic was a great movie and deserved every one of its Oscars).

I think this one takes the cake. And I say that as a fan of that original Rocky movie.

Winner: 1976 (49th) Rocky
o All the President’s Men
o Bound for Glory
o Network Yes
o Taxi Driver Yes

Way too many. I’ll have to think about it. This last year, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford really needed to be in the mix. There are a dozen films that should have been nominated over Juno (I like Juno too).

I think they pretty much all stand the test of time. As I went down the list I kept thinking they were all really good movies. Even the ones I haven’t seen are good movies. Of the winners, both Godfathers probably hold up best. Of the non-winners, Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction.

How many of these have you seen? Do you notice any trends?

I’ve seen 146.

  • What are some of the best nominees out there that didn’t win?
“Chinatown” and “The Conversation.” But “The Godfather , Part II” deserved to win. '74 was an incredible year for movies.
“Goodfellas” losing to “Dances with Wolves”

  • Which Oscar wins surprised you the most, given the quality of the other nominees?
“Ordinary People” beating “Raging Bull” Again, “Dances With Wolves.” I remember at the time Pauline Kael’s review saying that Kevin Costner’s character should have been named “Plays With Cameras!”

  • What are some of the best films that didn’t even get a nod?
    “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

  • Which of these best stands the test of time? Which don’t?
“Chinatown,” “Patton,” “Godfathers 1 & 2,” “Nashville,” “Jaws,” “Amadeus,” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” stand up just fine.
“The Big Chill,” “The Goodbye Girl,” and “Working Girl,” don’t stand up well at all.

I’ve seen 131. Probably 90% of them after the Oscars…I saw Taxi Driver for the first time just this year.

I still haven’t seen any of the movies from 1992.

Oh my goodness yes. Ultimate answer there. How could I have forgotten?

Well damn, yes.

Goodfellas and Taxi Driver both deserved the win in their perspective years. Also I believe Appocalypse now was a far superior film to Kramer vs Kramer. (Hell is that even on DVD?)

I seriously believe all 4 films nominated were better than Kramer vs Kramer. However, it is on DVD. Amazon has it.

I have seen every winner since 1974 except for 1992’s Unforgiven. Don’t know how I missed it, but it is on my Netflix queue as of last night. I am not interested in the Godfather series, so the streak won’t go further back than that.

I have seen 147 of the movies, which is not bad, considering I was 8 when the list starts.

One trend I noticed is that all the 1983 titles began with the letter “T”, though they wouldn’t alphabetize that way.

Probably not what you’re looking for, though.
