I’ve been twitching a lot for the past few days. Mostly my face. It’s starting to give me a headache.
Have you been diagnosed with Tourette’s, or are you just guessing that’s what you might have? In the latter case, you should see a doctor; in the former, you might also want to see a doctor.
Are you on any medication? Might be a side effect. And of course, what ultrafilter said.
On the count of three, everyone throw warm soft fuzzies at Rilch’.
one

three!
Sorry to hear you’re not feeling well, Rilch. I can empathize a little. If I get an anxiety/panic attack, my right eye twitches like crazy, just like the boss guy in those old Peter Sellers’ Pink Panther flicks. It does get terribly annoying real quick. I find a good sound sleep usually remedies it for me.
Happy Easter to you. If I could, I’d give you a choco bunny or some peeps to cheer ya up. Take care
Warning: IANAD
…but my nephew and my sister’s brother-in-law (the kid’s uncle) both have Tourette’s, so I have seen it in action. Both of them starting twitching at around age 7 or 8. It gets worse when they are upset, but never completely goes away.
Medication can help, so I will join in the chorus of See Your Doctor.
On the other hand, a recent twitch could more likely be nervous anxiety, in which case medication might help, so See Your Doctor.
Or, try other ways of mellowing out (take a few days off, weekend away if you can, long bath, etc) and see if that helps. It’s not anything to do with doctors, but having a little fun never hurt!
Good Luck
I’ve been diagnosed, but I was told there was no medication that would help. Perhaps a second opinion is in order.
I just had a vacation. That’s when it cropped up. Vacations tend to be the opposite of relaxing for me.
These are the same twitches I’ve always had; they’re just more frequent.
I know there IS medication…one of my friends at uni had Tourette’s and was so embarrassed by it that she started taking medication. But the meds made her put on weight (a LOT) so in the end she decided she’d rather deal with the twitching.
So the meds are out there…I guess you just need to find out if they’ll suit you or not.
I know someone who has it, it doesn’t interfere with anything so we all got used to it. Doesn’t bother any of us.
And does anyone know why my right thumb keeps on twitching? It’ll do it every couple weeks or so, just enough to be annoying. I’m wondering because it’s the same muscle every time. Is it net-addict related? (all the typing)
My 11-yo daughter has Tourette’s and the medication Tenex (generic is guanafacine) has been a God-send. It does not cause weight gain, by the way. It does lower blood pressure, though, so it can make you sleepy.
In any case, the decision to medicate TS is one based on your own comfort level with the presence of tics. She was sufficiently embarrassed about hers that she wanted to deal with the side effects of medication. It has been a good trade-off, as the side effects are minimal and her tics are few and far between.
Tourette’s is a horrible disease in which voluntary bodily functions are replaced by involuntary jerks and twitches. In most cases, Tourette’s usually starts off as facial twitches, followed by neck jerks, to involuntary movements down to the toes, which will eventually end up in neurological impulses which cause curse words and vehement movements.
If I was in the early stages of this disease, I would greatly appreciate the assistance to get treated for this awful disease.
(yes, there are treatments)
uh…not exactly. A diagnosis of Tourette means that one has had both physical and vocal tics, though not necessarily concurrently, for a period of one year or more. The tics range from throat clearing and eye blinking, to rather complex movements and phrases. Very, very few sufferers have symptoms of cursing or complex movements. In fact, most cases are mild. It is NOT a progressive disease, but one that waxes and wanes. The perception that TS sufferers all bark like dogs or scream f**k you is FALSE.
I have a couple of relatives with Tourette’s, and one of them has been prescribed Prozac…such a small dose that he has to brak the capsules and put a few grains in a drink to medicate himself…
So there’re treatments, but from the looks of this thread they vary a LOT.
As far as the headache goes…Aleve is a godsend.
Darn it! I posted shortly after Hama did, just to let y’all know that I’d read, and appreciated, the replies, but had nothing particular to say in return. The board must have ate it.
My niece has been diagnosed with Tourettes. She is being medicated for the facial ticks. I don’t know what they have her on, though.
