The joke goes that the English took down all the road signs in the south of England when they feared invasion by the Nazis in an effort to make it harder for invaders to find their way around and then just forgot to put them back up when the war ended.
Another joke is that it’s all an elaborate plot to drive (Americans especially) foreign guests into fits of apoplexy when trying to find their way from point a to point b.
I would recommend not renting a car the whole time; the trains go pretty well and connect most of your destinations easily and faster than you could drive; schlepping your bags around ain’t much fun, but leaving them in the car isn’t a great option either.
ETA - I also think you’re trying to do too much in 1 week. I’d stick with just one of the cities you mentioned, or perhaps 2 (London and Oxford for instance) because there’s heaps to see in either one but too much to see in one week for all of them.
Directions asked of a pedestrian in the UK usually go along the lines of…
“Down this road ½ mile until you reach the Dog & Duck, turn left, carry on until you see the Pig & Whistle, carry on about a mile past the Slug & Lettuce and The King George then take the first right just after the Hare & Hounds”. “About 2 miles past there you’ll see The Green Man, turn right after the Horse & Farrier and just about 2 miles further on is the Nelsons Arms”
Or “second left after the train station, right at the Sainsburys, keep going straight on till you get to the roundabout with an engine block lying in the middle, third exit, then first house on the right after you pass the burn-out red car”
So I recommend not visiting Thamesmead…
Thanks for all the helpful tips. We really appreciate it. I hadn’t thought about the whole issue of the stick. That sounds like too much.
And, Chez Guevara, my wife or I may contact you soon. Thanks.

No that’ll only bring 'em back to where they are now, you meant third left after the station surely, just near the vandalised bus stop and burned kebab shop
