I know that the Vibe is a rebadged Matrix, but how about the Aerio?

It looks very similar to the Matrix/Vibe, has an in-line 4 cylinder and optional AWD as well.

Is the Aerio another rebadge engineering job, or has it been designed and manufactured independently and just looks and performs similarly?

Nope, different vehicle. It’s a Suzuki, which while they have done many rebadging deals with GM (Tracker, Metro) and are party owned by GM, is not involved with the Matrix/Vibe.
