This is a hoot. These guys hate each other and are fighting over first. Right now they could very easily end up in a playoff at this point.

What an epic collapse by Sergio. Standing on the tee at 17 tied for the lead, then dunks two in the water and takes a quadruple bogey. Then on 18 he again hits his tee shot in the water. Six over on the last two holes. I wonder how much money that cost him?
I’m sure he’s almost as pissed about Tiger winning as he is about himself losing.
Without a doubt he will find a way to blame someone, most likely Tiger, for it.
From the thread about Tiger mis-dropping his ball at the Masters, I thought the rule was that a ball in the water would be dropped where the ball left land. On Sergio’s second spladush, it hit land then bounced backwards into the water, but he teed off fro the start again. Couldn’t/shouldn’t he have dropped the ball over by the hole?
I guess a lion could beat him, though.
From a point where the ball last crossed the hazard - but no closer to the hole - so anything on the island would be nearer the hole.
Incorrect. He could have teed off again, played from designated drop area, or dropped anywhere behind the water hazard along the line through the hole and last point of entry into the water hazard. There are additional options for laterial water hazards, but this was not a lateral hazard.
The question was about dropping on the island where the ball bounced backwards from - not what other options Sergio had - for which I agree with you - he had several other options seemingly available and he chose to tee off again (twice).
Also - for this specific hole - it seems the only option is re-teeing or the drop area.
Looked it up -
<bolding mine>
I’m sure there are some more intracacies to be debated for other hazards - but in this case - it was either re-tee OR drop zone.
If that was a lateral water hazard, ZenBeam’s thoughts would be correct: he could have dropped on the island (in the likely event that he could find a spot on the island within 2 club lengths of where the ball last entered the hazard that is no closer to the hole than the point of entry). The reason he could not do this is that it was not a lateral water hazard, not because anything on the island is nearer to the hole.
sinster, your additional clarification is adding more misinformation: retee OR drop zone are not the only options, as I mentioned earlier (and as it says in the rules you quoted).
How is it adding mis-information?
In this specific case - what were Sergio’s other options?
That was my thought when I saw the thread title.
Garcia is a head case. He admitted in an interview that he might not have what it takes to win a major.
His hatred of Tiger is probably 60% jealousy, with the other 40% broken up between Tiger being an arrogant prick to Tigers fans and a few other things.
Remember, Garcia was supposed to be as good (or almost as good) as Tiger early in his career and never lived up to it.
Yesterday’s epic collapse is just another example of how Tiger Woods can beat someone by just being on the course and in contention. He gets into people’s heads. If Garcia was leading with someone else, he wouldn’t have shot for the flag and hit the water on 17. He would have tried for the center of the green and two putt, which is what just about everyone else did.
Tiger may be a jerk, but Garcia is a major choke artist. I don’t understand how these guys are supposed to be world class golfers, but need complete silence to perform. Hitting a golf ball isn’t as hard as hitting a baseball, and those guys can tune out the crowd. Why can’t golfers?
I hate that excuse.
I agree entirely. Never understood the “fragility” implied by contending a camera click ruining everything.
An example like Serg just serves to emphasize how incredible someone like Tiger - or even someone like Lefty, Jay Haas, vijay, etc are. The guys who are able to win 10+ times, and multiple times on the biggest stages, are truly a breed apart.
I guess the announcers said it was not an easy chip from the drop area, but it was pretty amazing to see hims pull such a classic “Tin Cup.” Would like to see someone juxtapose pictures of Serg and Kevin Costner standing there with their hands out, asking for another ball. As a hacker - as painful as it was to watch, I really love to see these sorts of things, cause heaven knows I’ve been there myself. Not incompnetition for the TPC, but certainly choking down the stretch.
Dislike Tiger for his womanizing, but so happy he’s back to being on top in golf.
Sergio was being a big 'ol pouty baby about Tiger and that affected Sergio’s game. It’s Sergio’s fault for letting Tiger in his head.
And now we have yet another ball drop controversy. Tiger may have dropped his ball at 14 too far forward, assuming that it had hooked sharply out over the water late in its flight-video seems to show that it was more of a pull, than a hook, tho.
The video from the blimp tells us nothing about the flight path of the ball, it is all but worthless as far as making a judgement on where it crossed the hazard line. Tiger, his playing partner, and his partner’s caddy all agreed on the spot to drop, as did Mark Rolfing, who was standing behind the tee box and saw the flight of the ball.
Dear Sergio,
You’re such a stupid. 3 shots in the water? No one should ever get another chance after screwing up 3 times in a row.
Sincerely,
Titus Young
