They’ve had some amazing and innovative performances. I think the first major drone display I watched was a SB halftime show. As you said, musical taste is subjective, but the halftime show has become a major event and not in the “so bad it’s good” way.
If I don’t know the artist, I’m not watching the halftime show, unless there’s some big controversy, or my snack bowl happens to be full and I don’t need to leave the sofa. Prince was worth it, Rihanna was worth it, Kendrick Lamar was worth it, but other than those, I couldn’t name a single halftime artist in the past 60 years or however long it’s been going.
Obviously some find this year’s show controversial, but I don’t. Puerto Rico is a US territory, not a controversy. Bad Bunny sounds like he fits in the category of things my kids my like but I’ll never understand, particularly if he sings in Spanish. If my kids seem into it then we’ll watch, otherwise we’ll probably skip it.
I wonder if he’ll open with “Balls In Your Mouth” or “Cadillac Pussy.”
Or maybe it’ll be “Fuck You Blind” and he’ll close with “Cool, Daddy Cool” to give the kiddie diddlers a little thrill. So many choices!
I watched In Living Color back in the day and was one of the people who switched over to it during the SB. But I was reminded of it by The Guardian today.
Michael Jackson and one of the most iconic performances of all time. Paul McCartney, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake (the famous wardrobe malfuction), Taylor Swift, Prince. That’s just off the top of my head and I’m not much of an NFL fan at all and have never paid attention to the halftime show in the years that I have even watched the SB. You’re not even trying.
Has never appeared on a SB halftime stage.
Oops. I meant Katy Perry. I should have double checked.
I looked it up. For my taste, 2002 through 2010 were pretty good. U2, The Stones, Paul Macartney, Bruce Springsteen. I don’t recall any of their performances, but a good line up for sure.
Since then, it’s mostly been acts that are not my cup of tea. I’m not offended by that. I honestly don’t care. I know other people enjoy these artists, and that’s fine.
It happens to all of us. I’m reminded of the tweet (paraphrased):
Twenty years ago, grocery store music sucked, it was all crap for old people. But now they play absolute bangers.
That doesn’t sound right. As we all know it’s required that the super bowl performers be American citizens
Just because they are popular it doesn’t mean they are good. They pay the NFL to perform. The whole thing is over-the-top.
Are you saying that the halftime show performer pays the NFL? That does not sound right to me. Esquire magazine said last month, “Per league policy, the NFL covers all costs related to production of the halftime show, including travel expenses. But the talent themselves don’t receive a paycheck.”
That was already addressed.
One memorable performance for me was Bruno Mars, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers came out as well.
Of course, it helped that it was part of the game where the Seahawks absolutely destroyed the Broncos, so I was already in a great mood before they came out to perform.
You must realize that art is subjective
I get the feeling Bad Bunny might not have been all that relevant.
He damn sure is now.
I still don’t understand the issue…did he piss Trump off or something?
Like many people, Bad Bunny is upset at Trump and in particular the way he has demonized immigrants or even citizens born in the US who are minorities (particularly Latinx/Hispanic communities). He also is very upset over what the DHS has been doing. Bad Bunny is extremely popular which gives him a large platform, and he has used that platform to be an activist against much of what Trump has been doing of late. So yes, that has really pissed off Trump and other MAGA folks.
Some conservatives have taken issue with Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, for years, whether it was his flirtation with gender fluid fashion or his outspoken criticism of Donald Trump’s administration and its immigration policies.
And then on top of it, he is a native Spanish speaker, he has appeared in events in makeup, nail polish, wearing clothing that would traditionally be worn by women, and he’s from Puerto Rico which many people on the right forget is actually part of the United States. There is just a lot for them to hate about him.
I loved when he was on Saturday Night Live and performed as both an actor and musician. He was very entertaining. I get why he’s so popular.
Not all that relevant? He has multiple songs with over a billion listens and many, many billions of views of his Youtube videos. That was before the right got offended.
I would love to see what kinda views/listens someone gets when they are relevant.
Like I said I’d not heard of the performer.
I’m around young people. Maybe it’s not on their radar and this why I don’t know.
Also there are lots of acts I’ve never seen or heard but til there’s an incident or reason I might not call them relevant. I’m sure others are different.
It’s a me thing…no one’s fault.
TY @Atamasama
We all know artists have no relevance unless white Boomers know of them.

I know who Bad Bunny is - he played the Mexican assassin on Bullet Train. Not a lot of screen time, but he made a strong impression.
