So there’s this series of concerts scheduled to take place on the National Mall, ostensibly tied to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, but almost certainly all about Trump. That Trump is all over this can be seen by the D-list performers scheduled to perform:
Martina McBride
C+C Music Factory
Vanilla Ice
Milli Vanilli
The Commodores
Flo Rida
Bret Michaels
So yeah, everyone on the list is well past their prime, and/or were one-hit-wonders when they were in their prime. Meanwhile, two other D-list acts had been scheduled to perform, but once they realized what they were getting themselves into, backed out.
“That’s a no from me,” says Morris Day, of Morris Day & The Time (Jay and Silent Bob will be thrilled). And Young MC gave a vague promise to perform “in D.C. in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged.”
I’m hoping Bret Michaels, who has previously stated that he endorses no candidate and is Independent, will realize what a fool he’s making of himself and set things right. Ditto The Commodores.
The Milli Vanilli fake singing group is even faker than you think, because one of them died of a drug overdose back in '98 so the other half bought the rights to the name, hiring fill-ins.
I wouldn’t call it particularly sus. I would say that’s a pretty much an expected lineup for someone who ..
A: has not listened to new music in 40+ years
B: never had good taste in music or cared about it
C: is a terrible fascist who no one wants to be associated with
D: never wants to spend money and has stiffed everyone who he ever owed money to
E: only employs useless lackeys who have no skill in booking big acts or anything else
I wonder who the biggest MAGA act is. I’d say Nicki Minaj is the biggest, but her style of music isn’t going to have broad appeal among MAGA’s base. Kid Rock and Ted Nugent are both pretty washed up, although for some reason MAGA insists on believing Kid is relevant. A couple of Country musicians I couldn’t name.
As with a lot of bands from the '70s and '80s which are still “active,” the current iteration of the band bears little resemblance to its heyday. In this case, the Commodores lineup currently consists of only one original member (William “WAK” King), and three other musicians who joined last year – two of whom are sons of the group’s longtime drummer Walter Orange.
