Tracing Down a Scammer

We all get scammers trying to con us into giving them our money, and most of them don’t even bother leaving a message. Even those who do, don’t usually incessantly call back. This one is different, however, because it happens virtually every day with virtually the same message. However, it also leaves a specific number to call, and that is the focus of my question.

Since that is a specific number that some con artist is going to answer to set the hook, so to speak, can it be used to trace the source and the group doing this? Below is the exact message:
“This is an urgent alert regarding your outstanding tax balance. As you know, resolution options are time sensitive and penalties continue to accrue. It’s crucial we speak to you and get you into a resolution program. To reduce accruing interest, give us a call as soon as you get this at 833-766-1884 regarding stopping further collection activity, that’s 833-766-1884. We look forward to hearing from you and reaching a resolution.”

Doing anything to help destroy people like this would be a dream come true for me. Is it possible, or do they somehow still protect themselves in some way and, if so, how?

Regardless of what the message sounds like (I get at least one a day with that same recording), it’s almost certainly coming from somewhere overseas. That’s enough for most domestic/local law enforcement departments to not get involved. I think your best bet would be to try and get it to the attention of one of the youtubers that like to mess with these guys.

Thank you for the advice!

My cousin likes to call them and waste their time by pretending to an old man with dementia. He seems to enjoy doing it but I tell the downside is that he is giving them free voice pattern styles of his speech so that they can send and have fake conversations with people he knows. Like me.

You’re right. I NEVER answer. Also, I would imagine, calls that get human response are probably escalated in their hierarchy of people to call because, if no one answers, you have zero chance of success but, if someone does, you have your foot in the door.

You are right, but…

If I make the mistake and answer, it is pretty clear, early on, that I fucked up. I should not have answered, that puts my number in the database as a possible mark.

But.

But, if I do answer, and I quickly realise my mistake, then it is time to go all-out crazy. Really crazy.

In a mixture of pathological attention-seeking behaviour, with ludicrous levels of self-effacement and clearly delusional thought processes - and here, I thank my lucky stars that psychopaths tend to be on the high end of the IQ scale - I bamboozle, bullshit and (in a very obviously amateur way) prosetelise in a way that I get sent straight onto the “do not call list”.

I’m not impolite or rude or racist or anything particularly bad. I just come across as beyond sanity in a way that mere call center staff cannot compute.

Well, that would be more than interesting to witness!
