I know that as you get bigger it makes a lot more sense to have a bigger chassis, i.e. going from a front mounted, big-block gas engine to a rear-mounted diesel pusher to a genuine bus coach. But isn’t using a big-rig tractor as a motorhome overkill? I find it hard to believe that the weight of it even approaches the weight of a fully loaded freight trailer.
When I was the assistant manager of a huge campground in Northern California we saw several of these. We also had a few people come in with just the tractor pulling a 5th Wheel.
It seemed that the majority of people who drove these were very welltodo retired folks who travelled continuously. This was their home. That is why these puppies have every mod-con possible.
Yes, it may seem like overkill, but if you have the money and the inclination, why not? Show off, live well, enjoy the last few years of your life…
Well, that would be, but the picture is of a motorhome built upon a big truck chassis (not necessarily a tractor trailer - many of these chassiss have van bodies or flatbeds attached).
Guess we’ll go with the ‘cool’ factor, since I doubt they really need all that horsepower (I think a smaller COE delivery van chassis would be all that’s needed).
