Big Hairy Foot room was here in Indy, and I believe they took down the Foot, the God-awful light fixture, and re-painted. I’ve heard (don’t remember where) that the Flowers in the Bathroom were removed, and new drywall put up, to the tune of $10,000. I believe a Time article mentioned the Movie Theater room - they took it all out/down, and re-did it the way it was. The HO was wondering if anyone wanted 50 yards (or whatever) of brown curtains?
Mildy spoilerish stuff I got from the TWoP site abouit the $100,000 episode:
Doug does a very modern kitchen with dark colors. He used top-of-the-line appliances and bought the HOs a Jenn-Air range. Very space-age styling.
Laurie does a living room and spends $30,000 of the $50, 000 on curtains alone ($30,000 just on curtains? WTF? I just hope she reads the freaking package this time and gets enough panels!! )
She also buys the HOs a flat-screen TV. She also buys a lot accessories like nice books.
The Pullman Car room was here in Baltimore, not far from where I live, in fact. I have no idea what was done with it, though. I thought the HOs liked it.
IIRC, I heard the Pink & Gray Tent Montrosity was taken down and made normal again soon after the Hildi-Beast left. They did appreciate the new furniture, though.
I have no additional comments about Saturday’s shows except that I also thought Laurie said “puppy season.” I think her Southern accent is to blame. She used to annoy me but now I can appreciate that she tries to do a decent room and usually pulls it off. I am officially registering my annoyance/major dislike of Doug and his tantrums and attitude and have decided I’m not watching any epis with him so I will miss the $100 grand show which he will just crap up anyway and waste the money. Why oh why didn’t Vern get 50K? Probably because he’d spend the money wisely and the room would look like a million. Not enough controversy. Have to add that I cannot wait for the “They Hated It” special tonight.
I heard the tent monstrosity HOs sold the tenting on e-bay, which is what prompted the producers to modify the HO contracts to include a clause that disallowed them from selling things used by the TS decorators on e-bay.
As for this past weekend’s episodes: I loathed Frank’s bedroom. It was typical Frank Arts-and-Crafts cheap-looking crap. I even hated the colors. <shudder> His living room was meh.
Christie’s library – beautiful. Laurie’s livingroom, also beautiful (even if it was her standard color scheme).
I’m really looking forward to the $100,000 episode, too. Watching some of the shows on HGTV, it’s easy to see where $50,000 can go in one room. But if the rumors are true about where Laurie spent the bulk of hers, it’ll be a crying shame. While it’s clear that things like fabrics and linens can get really expensive, they should never take up more than 60% of your budget – furniture and fixtures should be your primary expense.
For instance, on this episode of HGTV’s Sensible Chic, the designer bedding cost $4,640 and the cashmier throw another $800. But that’s a much smaller fraction of the $31,000 total cost of the room than what’s being speculated Laurie spent on hers. (And isn’t it amazing how close in appearance they can come in duplicating that room, spending only $2,100?!).
I’m also looking forward to tonight’s “They Hated It” special. Can’t wait to see what other HOs they include that haven’t been featured in the previews (it can’t only be those 3, can it?).
saramamlana, that was Doug’s room, which can be seen here. The homeowner had an extreme hatred of feet, so this was how he decorated her livingroom. Of course it was just “artwork” on canvases, so it was easy to take that part down. But the flowers on the walls that looked like eggs were pretty horrendous, too.
Laurie’s “puppy” picture: I think $60 sounds like a steal to have a photo blown up and mounted. I, however, do NOT belive you -could get a digital picture blown up that HUGE and have it come out remotely good. I’d like to see the picture up close or find out what make of camera that was! I liked this room well enough with the exception of the design on the screens & mantle. I totally thought she said “puppy season” too, and was like “what the hell?”
Christi’s wall treatment: Ok, I’m the only one but I thought it sucked. I hate Doug’s “venetian plaster” wall treatments too. I think it just looks like you had really drunk-ass shitty plasters in, and now your walls are farked up. I especially didn’t like the “wash” she put over the wall, so that now not only did it look badly plastered, it looks filthy on top of it! It looks like that room saw 50 years of chain-smoking. Yuk! I did like the color, and that she gave them two office areas, but both the bookcases and the desks looked cheap and crappy (like most of the furniture they make on this show.) I like the one leather wing chair she picked up for a song. I guess the main damage was to the seat because it looked like she’d made a nice fitted seatcover for it. It looked much better than the other covered chair (though I’m guessing that wing chairs have to rank pretty high on the “tricky to cover” scale.)
Frank’s rooms:  Ugh to both. That blue room could’ve been so nice if he would’ve been able to REIGN IT IN a little bit. I’m sure the phrase “less is more” registers as “does not compute” to Frank. I notice his new fetish is the Dremel tool. It seems to have replaced his “hammer together a pile of wood scraps, paint it like a 3 year-old and call it art” fetish, but the season is young.
Just curious hijack: Has anyone been watching the new Clean Sweep program? I’m loving it all up!
Clean Sweep depresses me; it makes me think of all the things I should be doing besides watching TV.
Uh, WTF was up with “They Hated It!”? I was expecting a show about several HOs who were disappointed, with clips and interviews and maybe confrontations with the designers. Instead, I get a rerun with one minute added during which the designer says, “Sorry, I thought it was good.”
Yeah, I was displeased with “They Hated It!” as well. I was expecting it would be all or mostly new material. After getting suckered into watching most of Crazy Jesse I watched something else through most of the other two eps and flipped back for the reveal and the interview. Who knew Crying Pam could come off any worse than she did during the show? I mean really, to bitch about how Doug “just zooms off in his rental car” when he was there apologizing immediately after the episode. I liked Doug’s snarky “I don’t decorate barns” line and I applaud Rick for his honesty. “I design for the reaction, love it or hate it” or words to that effect.
i was displeased and disappointed by the “they hated it” show. once again the teasers did not give a true picture of what was going to happen.
voguevixen, i love the clean sweep show as well. i’m so glad they are finally going to rerun them on saturday. my rooms look so uncluttered now!
on the blow up of the “puppy,” there is a lot of computer tinkering to get the image to enlarge without losing clarity. if it isn’t done correctly there is a “lego” look to the picture. the computer gurus that work with me can take a paper photo, scan it, tinker, and print it out on a large colour plotter. the end result is amazing. if you print it out on glossy photo paper, it looks just like it came out of the dark room. our cg’s use macs and mac software to do it.
Really? Why? I mean, I would think once they leave, all that stuff belongs to you, and you can do whatever you want with it!
I watched the “Hated It” marathon. THAT was Crying Pam? That’s IT? I kept waiting for her to start sobbing hysterically-instead she just got a little weepy, and that was it.
I also thought Doug was an ass-they didn’t want the fire place painted. I don’t blame them, as it’s a pain in the ass to have to worry about painting brick. (I also heard that later on, it was discovered to be a fire hazard-the facade, that is! Sawdust and all!)
Although yeah, since Doug appologized and even gave her a hug, I’d say she was acting like a snot. But I still think Doug’s an ass.
I LOVED Rick’s turquoise room! It was so whimsical! But I don’t blame the homeowner for being pissed about the candlesticks-from her WEDDING? EEEK!!!
Yeah, Doug was an ass in that room. Gee, there’s a newsflash for you!
From what I’ve heard, the FP was on the HO’s “protected” list, meaning it could not be touched or altered in any way. Doug was a real PITA to keep going on and on about painting it. He knew ahead of time he couldn’t paint it, so he should have just not even bothered.
I thought the room looked nice, but it was too sleek and contemporary for that set of HOs. Obviously, they like the country or shabby chic style, and what he did was not going to please them.
And I also heard that it was a fire hazard in that there was sawdust behind it, and the facade covered up part of the controls for the FP. It was a gas FP, and they covered the dials (or something) used for adjusting the settings. Bad craftsmanship!
See that room looked totally country to me:
Wainscotting - country
lamps on fireplace - country
wall treatment - country (it looked like a flannel shirt to me)
pillows - country (they were a sort of brown mattress ticking IIRC)
The only thing they didn’t like was a) the color, b) it was clean and uncluttered, and c) they really just couldn’t see anything other than the fireplace. I do like how they re-did the room, and though they didn’t come out and admit it, they obviously liked that there was SOMETHING on the fireplace because there was a new mantle & sides in their redo.
I do think Doug was a prick when he said “well, I don’t do barns” or whatever. What a spaz.
That’s another thing I like about the Clean Sweep show…they focus on making the most of the room and making it something the people might actually use and like, without using a bunch of weird gimmicks and going for shock value. A lot of the times the rooms might be bland, but because they’re now clean and organized they look 1000% better.
:smack: Wow, I never even thought of it that way. You’re right. I guess since it wasn’t Barn Red, and wasn’t cluttered up with tons of Longaberger baskets on every flat surface and gingham all over and quaint little distressed wooden hearts and duck and stars propped up all over, it wasn’t “country” to them.
Shayna, NOW I remember the foot thing. That room looked absolutely lovely before anything was done, and the result was beyond ridiculous. Looked like it was done by and for a 6th grade kid.
Rick’s turquoise room freaked me out. The wall color wasn’t that bad, but paired with the orange and the green on the doors was just waaay too much. And the random gold leafing on the table? Gahh!!
Frank’s blue Caribbean room was, I agree, too much blue. OTOH, I do like matching that shade of red with a slightly lighter blue. I just think that all that intense color would be too hard on the eyes. I had to squint a little just watching it.
My favorite Doug diva fit (and you know that’s what they are) was the episode where he argued with the HOs about putting a stain on the floor (the other room was Hildi’s Tiffany box room). He got so huffy that he left them altogether and gave them instructions on the curtains via PaigeCam. And he went and visited the other house! I was so mad at him in that episode, what a prima donna.
I’ve heard the “fire hazard” part of this before but have never seen a cite. I didn’t watch the entire show this time but I seem to remember Doug and/or Ty talking about the surround being made of fire-proof material. Also, the fireplace had glass doors on it so as long as the HOs were operating it properly it doesn’t seem likely that there’s be any great risk of fire. As far as the controls being blocked, Doug activated the fireplace after the install so that’s obviously not entirely true.
I noticed that they built on a smaller surround too and laughed and laughed. The underlying brick is still wicked fugly, though.
Not that bad? I saw those walls and thought they were going to do weather forecasts on the TV news. Don’t know what the color was described as, but it sure looked like Chroma Key Blue. Only thing that dining room was missing was music - Spike Jones’ Dinner Music For People Who Aren’t Very Hungry would be an apt choice.
