With so many Australians injured and dead in the Bali attacks, news that an aquaintance was one of three people killed in a steam train crash was unexpected. If I’d thought that I’d hear this kind of bad news, I would have expected it to come from Bali.
One of the three men killed in this accident was the son of one of my drivers (I work for a transport company; I print up the payment advices for the truck drivers). I’m especially sad because a) He’s a really nice man and a battler b) The mother of the boy and wife of the driver is fighting cancer, and after 7 years it seems unlikely that she will win the battle c) He was a nice guy in his own right, and only a month shy of his 21st birthday d) This is the second driver to lose a son in three months.
It’s hard to understand why this man has had to endure so much hardship during the last decade. I am afraid that the loss of their son will weaken his wife and hasten her decline. I admire him for the incredible efforts he has made to look after his wife and children, and am so terribly saddened by his loss. I’m also sorry to see a nice young man taken too soon.
