Training program for new Senators.

Let’s say that I am elected Senator of my state. I say all the right things, I am cute enough and liked enought that I win.

I am a Senator-Elect. But to be honest, I don’t know anything about being a Senator. I know a bit from high school and college. But what if I was in private business and i decided to run and win?

Is there any on the job training? Like the veterans take the freshman into a room and show them a video on what a Senator does, with the leader of the party telling him to vote for.

I would love to be a United States Senator. I’d rather be a Senator than Mick Jagger. Really. I would spend the next six years fighting for what I think is right and what I believe in. I would con all those people backing me up and then I would do mostly the opposite. I would be so loud, media hungry and crazy that the national press would follow me around. Every motherfucking day I was allowed to speak for my poor state, I would scream out loud that the country is dying and everyone needs to wake the fuck up. Why is there not one person out of a hundred willing to do this. One out of one hundred rich people who can stand up and say and lead to what needs to be said and done.

Do you want to be a Senator? If you were the forst day, do you know what to do, or do you need a lecture?

Hopefully someone can say whether there’s a formal orientation or not.

But let’s keep in mind that senators have staffs that work for them. If you don’t know the customs, you’ll make sure you hire someone who does.

Senators also have a cloud of lobbyists following them. I’m sure they’ll be happy to explain anything you’d like, just for the opportunity to make a strong initial connection with you.

The Senate and the House both have a freshman orientation for newbies. They probably all hire some staff who know their way around as well.

Even more details here:

The job of a Senator is to get elected to office and acquire wealth. You’ve already done the first part, you will have no problem getting advice on the second. There’s some other part about laws and whatnot, but it doesn’t seem to be important.

There are a lot of fantastically easier ways to acquire wealth than becoming a senator. The salary is pretty terrible, given the workload and rather arduous hiring process.

Workload? Salary, yeah there is something like that. Pocket change for a Senator.

I interned for a freshman congressman many years ago in my state. Besides orientation, he hired a couple of aides and a secretary that were familar with the ins and outs of the state legislature. These folks pretty much guided him (and covered his butt a few times) during that legislative session.

Do they drug test Members of Congress? They are Federal employees.

To what end? They are duly elected members of congress, and it’s not clear how a drug screen would impact that. They could be censured, but that would require the body to vote on things. I suppose the drug screen could be used as evidence for that trial by the Senate, but again, to what end?

No. Executive branch regulations do not apply to the legislative branch, due to the whole separation of powers thing in the Constitution, and Congress has made no rule that its members be drug tested.
