(1) Would an MtF transsexual who started taking female hormones in his late teens be less likely than a male to have hair loss in her 30s? Specifically, could she come up with a hairdo like Loni Anderson in WKRP without using a wig?
(2) On a related note: was Loni Anderson wearing a wig?
Umm… I was fine with this question until you brought Loni Anderson into it. I would prefer a normal head of hair.
Testosterone causes balding, so yeah, block it or eliminate it early and keep your hair. The earlier the better.
Sorry, you mentioned Loni Anderson and all I can think of is fellatio, w/ those big eyes lookin’ up at me. God, what a mouth!
The earlier that hormones are taken, the less of any male pattern hair loss which would normally be expected will happen. While an enormous number of later hormone-taking M2Fs report hair regrowth, I suspect that much of it is wishful thinking and placebo effect, especially as many report hair regrowth within the first few days after starting hormones. And barring some sort of odd medical condition, that just doesn’t happen.
I am only aware of one study that looked at older M2Fs and hair loss, and the numbers I remember were that 2 years out, hair loss had stopped for about 90%, vertex regrowth was seen in about 75% of the cases, frontal hairline regrowth occurred in about 25% of the cases, and hair loss continued to increase in about 10% of the cases. But don’t take those numbers as any kind of “cite”, they are poorly remembered numbers from a hardcopy study I used to have.
But yes, overall hormones are much more powerful at feminizing when taken at an early age. It’s safe to say that an M2F who starts early enough could have a full, rich head of hair if their other genetic factors allow it. Very generally speaking, the M2Fs that can typically easily pass were taking hormones, either approved by a doctor or illicitly, in their teens.
Wow, nice descriptive thread title. /sarcasm
It was supposed to be “Trans hair question.” I would ask if it could be changed, but you guys answered my question anyway (well, except for the bit about whether Loni A. was wearing a wig, but that was a side question anyhow). So thanks.
