All the review snippets listed on all the entries at the Criterion Collection site are about the DVD release, rather than being about the movie. Armegeddon is no exception in this respect.
I don’t think you’re licensed to say the “only one praising the guy was his old college professor.” Presumeably, there is some kind of implicit praise being given by the people in charge of the Criterion Collection as a whole, constituted by the fact that they’ve, indeed, decided to give the “Collection” treatment to the film.
Could be. I’m not familiar with the site, so I just clicked on “Reviews” to see what people had to say about the movie. The consensus amongst the reviewers was that the movie was bad; however, what you said certainly helps explain why they seemed focused on the DVD release.
I see where you’re inferring the praise just by Armageddon being listed, but I was talking about the listed reviews and whatnot. I think it’s a given that someone liked the movie well enough to include it on the list; however, that just signals to me that whomever that person or group was had pretty bad taste–at least for this one film.
At any rate, my point with my last post was to highlight the ironic humor of bad reviews of a movie being listed in a collection of supposed good flicks.
