This is one of trump’s buzz phrases. Does anybody know just what the fuck that means?
He’s making up the idea that liberal support of transgender people means that they’re somehow going to make the people YOU care about transgender, which is supposed to be a scary thing. For a lot of people it IS a scary thing.
I’ll be honest, the parents I know with kids who came out as other than cisgender were very concerned about their children’s futures. They were 100% supportive, I believe, but it’s still an unexpected thing, and brings with it a lot of uncertainty.
Exactly this. He’s saying that Democrats want to make people transgender against their will; he has also claimed that kids are undergoing transgender surgeries at school, without their parents’ knowledge.
It’s all fearmongering bullshit, of course.
Simply put, he means “Transgender for everyone, whether they want it or not”.
And it’s worth noting, Trump himself might not believe this, but during his first election run, he made it clear that he just latches onto any BS that gets a reaction. It’s how he got “Lock her up!”; he says ten stupid things, two of them get cheers, and so he repeats those two in every subsequent appearance. It’s part of why his usual talks are so rambling and disjointed - he’s just tossing out the most popular slogans, getting the cheers, and not caring that there’s no logical flow to the notions.
I have heard it called “Fishing for idiots”.
How do you “make someone transgender” if they don’t want it? Force all boys to wear dresses? Force girls to date other girls? This is so stupid it’s hard to see how even MAGAts swallow it. And yet…
There was one rally where you could see him do this in real-time. I can’t find the video now because it’s been swamped by all his other anti-trans crap, but he mocks his audience. They give mild applause to him talking about his tax cuts, but go wild over the anti-trans comments. He said something like, “Five years ago, you didn’t even know what trans was.”
These are the people who heard “They’re eating the cats” in a nationally televised presidential debate, and just rolled with it. They’re not the sharpest spoons in the drawer, is what I’m saying.
“A demagogue or rabble-rouser, is a political leader in a democracy who gains popularity by arousing the common people against elites, especially through oratory that whips up the passions of crowds, appealing to emotion by scapegoating out-groups, exaggerating dangers to stoke fears, lying for emotional effect, or other rhetoric that tends to drown out reasoned deliberation and encourage fanatical popularity.”
"Demagogues overturn established norms of political conduct, or promise or threaten to do so. Historian Reinhard Luthin defined demagogue as “a politician skilled in oratory, flattery and invective; evasive in discussing vital issues; promising everything to everybody; appealing to the passions rather than the reason of the public; and arousing racial, religious, and class prejudices—a man whose lust for power without recourse to principle leads him to seek to become a master of the masses. He has for centuries practiced his profession of ‘man of the people’. He is a product of a political tradition nearly as old as western civilization itself.” [Wikipedia]
He’s telling them what they want to hear, stupid as it is. They think transgender is unnatural, they think brown people are scary, they think that Democrats want to ban Christianity, etc., so even the most ludicrous statements which feed into those fears get gobbled up.
Some people might sometimes wonder (here and in real life) why I can be such a stickler for getting the details right. (Maybe you didn’t notice, but sometimes I make myself kind of a nuisance about this, where it seems important). It’s because of this. If you don’t care about keeping the facts straight and the details right, you are acting like a demagogue, even if your end goals are desirable.
Sorry to hijack by drawing attention to myself, but I think the principle is important.
Ahem. I can assure you, they are not. ![]()
Yeah this is just the natural conclusion to this kind of bullshit…
The whole trans issue is not much use as anger bait for Maga if it’s just “some people are trans” it needs to be “they are trying to make everyone you love turn trans!!”
Mandatory gay marriage wasn’t as bad as the fascists said it would be, so I think it’s simply fearmongering about mandatory transgender.
Anecdote:
I once attended a party where the theme was “wear pink”, and being considerably slimmer back then, I obtained a junior high school pink uniform (full on pinafore style) which was a tight squeeze but I fit it… just. I am a 6 foot man…
Even then, I managed to get flirted with and kissed a girl.
If everyone is transgender, then mathematically it all works out, somehow.
I wonder if their view reflects their innate authoritarianism? By that I mean they presume their children should and must and will conform to whatever the parents command, unless some other force compels them to do otherwise. Thus they must fight that force. The children, of course, are irrelevant in their “battle” to retain authority.
It’s an astonishingly (and depressingly) successful tactic.
Whatever the topic, whatever criminality the government is engaged in, “…but the left don’t know what a woman is” and a large proportion of the population run off after that squirrel.
Even here in the UK, I’ve encountered so many lengthy, angry screeds about trans that contain zero data points about the supposed problem.
That’s just heteronormativity with more steps!
