My grandpa mailed me a book of our family history, but it’s in Norwegian. I’ve scanned it into the computer and have it saved as a PDF. How do I find someone to translate it? I’ve been doing some searches online but am a little lost and would appreciate any advice.
Bumping this and making it more of a general question. Has anyone ever paid to get something translated, and if so, what was the rate that you paid? I’ve gotten an estimate for how much it would cost to translate the book with my family history. I think it’s a low estimate, but I don’t have anything to compare it to, and it’s still a lot of money.
I recently received a pile of journals and letters from my Grandmother’s side of the family- all in Polish. I emailed the local Polish Historical Association asking for assistance, they said they would have some browse the papers for free (giving an overview), a complete translation would cost - but they didn’t say how much. Since some letters are relatively brief and some are crammed from edge to edge, I would expect it to be a per the hour kind of thing.
If there is a Sons of Norway in your area, I would contact them for assistance.
Is it hand written or typed? If you’ve scanned it and it’s been typed then you might have good luck OCRing it and then running it through Google translate. That’s not going to be a great translation, but it might be worth it just to see what kinds of knowledge you’ll get out of it and then determine if it will be worth it to pay to have it translated.
I used to work for a translation company. They have a service called click2translate using real native speakers to translate anything you can think of. It won’t cost you anything to get a quote there at least. Won’t be cheap unfortunately.
