I have a '97 pontiac grand am V-6 AT and have a hopefully small transmission problem. It only happens in first gear and only at certain rpm’s, there’s a slight grinding sound. If I let off the gas a little or press a little harder it stops. What could be the problem…
I have that same car year and all and same noise, and it gets worse. Love to know what it is because it has the dealership stumped, not that they know too much anyway. They did say it was the transmission. Oh and if you don’t mind telling me…do you have a driver’s side window motor problem? Or have you previously?
'98 Grand Am here…No tranny problem, but I did burn out my passenger window motor. PAIN IN THE ASS to replace (did it myself.) Just recently had a driver side window motor in an 02 Cavalier. Still under warranty so I let them do it this time.
my passenger’s power window took a crap 6 months ago. the costs for parts and labor will be about 225, or do it yourself for about 60. I was on www.carsurvey.org and found many people with the same window problem.
Hmmmm, one day I was at the drive-in ATM behind several people. My husband and I were complaining that we have to open the door and/or get out when we do drive-in anything and it stinks. The car in front of us, a grand am looking much like ours, pulled up and got out of his car to use the ATM. My husband asked him what year his was and he said 97 like ours. He said his window motor had died about 3-4 months before. I thought that was somewhat indicative that it might be a Pontiac issue, So when you said yes to that, I am not shocked but certainly disappointed because I love my car and I think they probably know that this window defect happens. They should pay!
the most common grand am problems from this era seem to be the power windows and the volume knob on the radio. there’s a guy on ebay selling these window motors and he says they’re better then the factory motors.
Yes I have the volume knob problem too. No mention of the transmission grinding noise in the survey?
