Transmission Speeds

I was noticing the other day at work that most fax machines transmit 6ppm. One says that it does 7 second faxes. That would be faster than 6ppm.
My question is, since we’ve been computing, we’ve gone from 1200 baud to 56k. But faxes have always been at 14.4k. Why is this? Is it not possible to transmit facsimilies faster than that?

If you want to have cities, you’ve got to build roads.

I think it’s just the standard. No reason i can see not to go faster. But I don’t know. I just wanted to post so I could do this:

-soul coughing

Guess: Perhaps it’s caching the pages. So it reads them at the faster speed but sends at the standard speed.

My guess is that the FAX machine is on the way out being supplanted by PCs and the Internet. I use my PC to send and receive faxes and save the paper.
Fax scans the page and compresses the graphic file using TIFF. You can do that with the PC and attach the file to email saving the cost of the phone call. Also you have a wider choice of formats etc.
So you can send a “fax” faster: just attach the graphic file to email.

Sure, but to send a paper document you still have to scan it into your computer. Using a fax for this purpose is still easier. Right?

I know what I want to know

The Nerd,
thanks, City Of Motors. Ruby Vroom. Hehheh, I was just listening to that yesterday. Ok, everyday…

Mangeorge, while I sometimes have to scan something (or take a picture using the computer cam), most of the time I generate my document in the computer and fax it and it never exists on paper.

For example, I can write a letter using my word processor, including graphics like a letterhead and my signature which I just paste on.

Then, instead of printing it to paper and scanning it with the fax machine, I just “print” it directly to the fax program which to the word processor is just another virtual printer.

Fax scanners are very bad and the cause of many irregularities. A fax that was not scanned arrives perfect.

But if I have the option, rather than send the file to a fax machine, I will attach it to email. It is easier, faster, saves paper at the other end, can be forwarded, retouched etc… none of these are true with a fax machine

Also fax machines are monochrome while you can send color by email… The more I think about it, the more I think Fax is obsolete

Which reminds me of telex. I used to use it constantly… does it still exist?

How 'bout telegrams? They were the best communication for many decades… who ever sends a telegram any more?

Soon we will be saying “remember faxes”? and the kids will say “what was that?”
