Hi… I recently had the band in the drum of my transmission replaced. It ran normal for about a week then began to start slipping when engaging gears. Last night it would not shift into 4 or 5th gear and was idling high? I dont want to be ripped off or lied to about the problem because i am a female. I would appreciate any advise. Thank You…
Best advice is to take it to a different mechanic to get a 2nd opinion on the problem. It could be a minor issue that the 2nd place could fix for a small amount. The only downside is not all mechanics work on transmissions so it might be a little harder finding one. The dealer is always an option but they are usually higher cost.
If possible, take it to a shop that is a member of ATRA (Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association). In my experience these are generally honorable competent shops.
I would avoid shops that are part of a chain. In my observation too many of them are not so honorable.
All I can do is relate a transmition issue my daughter had. It would not shift properly and would downshift at erratic times. I had her take it into a local shop with very reputable mechanics for a filter and fluid change and a tranny re-learn. This was a 07 Dodge Grand Caravan.
A few months later the same trouble started again and she returned it to the shop and a couple parts were replaced and another and another re-learn. A few months later again the problem arose and I had to borrow her van to go and buy another car for my wife after an accident totaled my truck and I couldn’t believe how badly her van was shifting! I stopped and bought a can of sea foam tranny hocus pocus and put in 1/2 of that can. I drove it about 100 miles that day and there was no improvement and because of her finances I made another appointment for service but the very next day she said her van was shifting properly and has now for over a year and I ask her all the time if that problem has re-surfaced and it hasn’t.
I had shifting issues (99 dodge with 300K) with my old pickup and that other 1/2 can of sea foam cleared that one up also.
The shop we use is a great one that dose tranny rebuilds and the mechanics are dealership professionals that went out on there own and have doubled the size of there shop this year.
What I mean by this is just because your issue isn’t resolved the 1st time is not an indication that the shop is a rip-off or un-reputable, these modern vehicles are very challenging!!!
Good Luck!!
