Travel Suggestions (cheap hopefully)

Here’s the story. My wife has SADS pretty badly. Because of this I try to see that she has several days to a week somewhere sunny and warm towards the end of February or the beginning of March. She has some relatives out west but for various reasons staying with them wont work. In past years she has either stayed with relatives or, on the rare occation we can swing it, goes to Disney or something.

Well, this year we are not able to afford something fancy and the relative aren’t going to pan out so I am turning to the SMDB for ideas.

We are in Vermont so the travel part will probably have to be by air, so the destination needs to be near a good sized airport.

She will be travelling with our 8 year old daughter so there should be something in it for her (lake, ocean, pool, etc)

Another requirement is that it must be low density. Too many poeple jostling about when she is feel dragged out from the SADS drives her nuts (Disney doesn’t count for some reason).

Other than that it just needs to be as cheep as possible. It doesn’t need to be exciting just somewhere warm where she can recharge.

If anyone has any ideas please pass them along.

One last thought. She is in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) so if we could find somewhere with an event going on around that time that might be cool to.

In Feb, to get warmth and sun, you need to get fairly far south. Florida or the Bahamas arent reliably warm at that time. So the cheap places are 1. Dominican Republic 2. Jamaica and 3. Mexico.

You can do a week at a high^end DR resort for$ 800, allinclusive.

Hmmmm … don’t know quite how much you’re willing to spend.

How about flight to Miami, then drive down into the keys? Key West is expensive, but perhasp Marathon?

The other thought would be a Windjammer cruise, if you have a little more money to spend. The airfare for them can be pricy.

I agree with the Keys- I live in Key Largo and it’s really beautiful in Feb. I personally wouldn’t recommend Key West, as it can get very expensive and caters more to a party crowd, but the upper keys are beautiful.

Does she like camping? I’ve heard that this park is gorgeous:

If not, there are plenty of places to stay up here in KL and fun things to do- fishing, snorkeling, just relaxing. It’s also a quick drive up to Miami and the beaches up there.

For Florida, the Gulf coast is better in winter. Calmer beaches with better softer sand. Probably warmer, but you should check with the weather channel website for confirmation of that.

Grand Canyon? It’s a bit of a haul, but if your Wife is with the child, and maybe a bit stressed, it may be eaiser than going out of the country.

The desert southwest, has some of the most sunshine that you could ever want.

Even bad days are good.

A good place to find cheap last minute rentals is tug2.com. People unload their timeshares here at the last minute (within 45 days) for $700 or less. Maybe hard to find air fare though. If you do this make sure they own the timeshare and are not trading, which is against the rules.

You can also find Disney deals sometimes on the same type of things, I got one last year for spring break at:

Thanks for the ideas everyone. I will be checking these out.
