It’s really not as bad as people imagine. I guess there are just a few things that people accept are relatively high risk such as swimming in murky, croc infested waters in the outback, swimming in the tropics in the wet season (box jelly fish are bad for you), and surfing near seal colonies. I’ve been here for nearly nine years and have only seen a couple of snakes, none of them dangerous. I’ve yet to see a wild crocodile in other than a controlled situation (e.g., from a boat or aeroplane), and I was narrowly missed by a drop bear just once. Unless you actively look for them the dangerous critters generally keep to themselves. Your mileage may vary of course.
For anyone considering a trip to Western Australia, I highly recommend the Dunsborough Rail Carriages and Farm Cottages. The mixture of a secluded cottage set amongst quiet farmland with friendly animals to keep the kids amused was great.
Sturmhauke, I’ll be sure to try those scallop recipes. I love scallops but have never tried cooking with them myself.
I’m here, and it’s so sweet and special the support you are giving me. A fuzzy blankie and yummy chocolate fondue… you are a MMPer keeper criminey! And thanks to you, special one as well. I don’t know how I would be keeping it together without all of you.
Things are not looking well for Lucy. She has begun seizing again, and so has been put back on meds (dilantin and ativan), and did I mention they have inserted a feeding tube and that she is still on the respirator? She’s been given an EEG, but the guy who reads the test results is out of town for a few days, so we have to wait to find out the results. This is hell.
Just to make things more interesting, the last root canal wasn’t properly done, and has flared, so I am on antibiotics and pain meds, and have to see the dentist later today. After that Susan, my remaining sister-in-law, is coming over so we can write Babe’s obituary.
I am hanging on, barely, but still standing. I can’t wait to post something, anything positive. Once again, thank you.
Where did you move from, Ray? I’d love to at least visit Australia sometime, but haven’t worked out how to manage it.
Forgot to mention earlier: I loved your recreated post, cj.
More importantly, can you spell the recipe?
Yay for snow days!
rigs, I think the great thing about this short-term job is that you’ve finally found the job you like and now know what you need to look for. That’s great. Keep smiling. It’s good for you.
Yay for snow days!
I have the day off too. I’m contemplating how to organize my day so that I can do stuff AND watch/listen to inauguration coverage. I’ll be using NPR as the soundtrack.
Cold. Brrr. Morning class. Brrr. Three classes after that. whineruns nekkid through thread
On the bright side, nothing hurt last night, although I felt kind of woozy anyway. Probably lack of food, since I barely ate before leaving for school.
Chilly, but clear here. How do y’all deal with all that snow? Spaz, you get a snow day and you’re going out in it? That’s just crazy talk! But, mmm…Krispy Kremes.
I woke up with a hell of a headache, but I’ve taken some aspirin. Hopefully it will kick in soon.
{{{kai}}} - continued prayers and good vibes for you and your family.
I watched the pre-inauguration celebration last night. It was a great show! Anybody else catch it? Pete Seeger was a lot of fun. That old fart was just wearing a flannel shirt and no coat! He had to have been freezing! (I just heard it was a re-run from Sunday.)
I better find something to do today. There’s only so much surfing one can do…
See this giant megaphone? I know you don’t but you know what I mean.

Those rail cars are pretty cool, Ray. I’d love to stay in one. Heck, I’d like to own one!
W00t! for snow days, Spaz. (Sorry, doggio.)
No hurties is good, Cap’n. Careful running; it’s icy!
We had a pretty quiet afternoon yesterday, that is after we got back from finding more memory to revive mr.j’s old laptop. Sixty bucks later he’s running XP with no issues. It was nice and sunny just that little bit further inland. We stopped for a rare fast food hamburger and parked just down the road at the pathway access along the estuary. Normally you can see across to the peninsula, where we live. When we got there, we could see about halfway across, with the big fog bank blowing in. By the time I dug out our burgers and fries, we were completely enveloped. mr.j cracked, "Don’t you love the view here? I giggled.
I suspect I will be planting my bottom in front of the TV for much of my morning…Happy Inauguration Day, America!
More! More! More Ironfoundersson running nekked! Actually, could you run a bit more slowly?

A Protocol has been established for the three Navasiblings to communicate directly to each other any booboo reported by Mom. Married Navasibling will communicate booboos to Navamomdoc (aka NavaSiL). Hopefully if, say, we all know about Mom having struck her foot against something, the foot will be Seen By A Doctor. Between the “ah! no! there is no need for anybody to change the lightbulb, I will just sit here alone and in the dark” moments and the sneaking about when something really is broken, she’s just a PITA to care for.
I realized something: Lilbro is very bad (that’s an euphemism) at thinking “what can I do for this person?” But the thing is, Middlebro and me are good at that and being with Mom kills us. So maybe you need to be like Lilbro in order to be able to survive Mom’s company for long (while being one of her children, how she is with strangers or simply with not-her-children is another animal).
I slept through my alarm this morning and got to work late, albeit ahead of the snow. I’m reserving the right to leave early; so far it’s snowing at home, but not too badly by recovering Hoosier standards. By NC redneck standards, I’ll bet there’s a raging blizzard.
VWife went to see her bone doctor for a regularly scheduled appointment. Just so happens he’ll look over her fall injuries while she’s there.

{{{}}}, ^5s, wet trout, and gooses as appropriate. Take what you want and pass the rest on.
Good luck with the mom stuff, Nava. My parents went through that with Dad’s mom. She was somewhat similar to your mom. It was difficult for my parents. (Now she’s got such bad dementia that it’s like dealing with a 2-year-old. But she’s in a nursing home so it’s not as hard for my parents who don’t have to deal with the day-to-day care.) So support and hugs from someone who’s been there through my parents’ experience.
Good luck with the snow to those not use to it!
I joined a very casual community chorus through the community center last night. They just get together once a week and sing for fun - no performances/concerts. It was great. They did a couple African songs/chants, an Irish drinking song, an American song based on a Robert Frost poem, and we’ll add more as we go. It’s mostly taught in a sort of call and response format (the director sings a line and we repeat it back to her). It was fun and relaxing at the same time. I’m really glad I joined.
The problem with being about the same height as your spouse is that your pants fit each other. KT got home last night and said “I wore your pants today!” He accidentally picked them up in the dark bedroom and they fit just fine when he put them on. It wasn’t until he went to the bathroom at work that he thought “These don’t look like Levi’s!” Hah! At least jeans aren’t too gender-specific so no one knew he was wearing girls’ jeans!
Ugh. I have the dentist this morning. I can’t stand having the water thing in my mouth because I can’t help the gulp reflex and I feel like I’m drowning.
This weekend I took a peek at a forum that I used to hang out on but left because of the constant stupid drama. I wish that I hadn’t because people that used to be friends are viciously ripping each other apart over rewriting the rules for what sounds like the third time in 6 months and people are leaving in droves trying to find a new place to hang out that doesn’t have a bunch of trolls and admins that don’t have the balls to do something about it. It was so sad to see how quickly it all fell apart.
I’m really glad that I found this place. You people are nice and normal and don’t need to spout insults every 5 minutes to feel fulfilled.
I didn’t mean normal in the boring sense of the word, but you all speak in full sentences and don’t seem to live for ‘teh lulz’, and people talk about more varied subjects here than endless discussions about how to run a forum that hardly anyone wants to hang out on anymore anyway. Shit posters drive out good posters pretty fast if they become the norm, I think.
Well, my housework fairy has gone - she cracked the sh*ts about actually having to do the job properly (like moving furniture when you vacuum!) and asked to be taken back to the agency this afternoon. So, the house is reasonably clean and we now start the search for a new fairy!
Veggie beef soup is simmering. As soon as I feed the doggies, I’m going to go pack my clay tools, then change into something grubby before class.
I watched the Inauguration on streaming video at work. One idiot at work went out of her way to get offended because Obama only mentioned 4 religious groups and non-believers - she took that to mean that she was a non-believer because she didn’t fall into one of those groups. Of course, she thinks the world is going to end because he was elected…
So, what’s the pool for how long the honeymoon will last?
Sorry, no more politics from me. My soup smells yummerrific, my little doggie is melting down because she wants to eat, and I need to get organized for school. Laterz, maybe tomorrow…
