TVMan and I took a trip to upstate New York to pick up some antique televisions and also to celebrate my birthday this weekend! We started out at the Sunshine Radio Museum in Sodus, New York. We looked at some old radios and various oldpartsfortvsand radios that they had just lying around. TVMan had wanted to make the trip in order to pick up some Zenith round tube television sets. This was the same model tv that his grandparents had in their living room when he was a little boy. The museum had three of them that we took home. We also picked up a couple Wabbulators (don’t ask… I don’t know) and twopicture tubes. One of the tubes was brand new in the box and the other one was used. Both tubes were 21 inches so you can imagine how big the boxes were that they came in.
Now the fun begins! Thank heavens there was a nice man named Haroldto help load everything in the truck. But as you can seeTVMan was perplexed at how we were going tofit it all in! So, after much lifting, packing, and Wobbulating, we were off once again. Our next stop was Amherst, NY which is about 30 minutes South of Niagara Falls. We checked into our hotel (which was very nice) and then headed for the Falls. As I had previously complained, we didn’t have passports so we couldn’t head into [URL=“http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s103/purplkid/IMG00163.jpg”]Canada. So, we took the obligatory pictures and headed back to our hotel for the night.
The next morning, my birthday, we were up early and left for home by 7:30. Not too long after we got on I-90 the main tarp loosened and we were forced to pull over. Did I mention that it was pouring down the rain? Did I mention that semis were zooming past us mere inches away? Did I mention that it was my birthday? Well, that temporary repair lasted about two miles and we ended up at an actual rest area.
Somewhere in there we noticed that some of our bungee cords had snapped in half. To make a long story longer, we stopped at two different places and bought more cords and straps. In the end, though, we decided that taking the ‘scenic route’ which would take an hour longer but would be safer than the high speeds on the interstate. This was my brilliant idea. This might have been a wonderful plan if the scenic route hadn’t passed through the Allegheny National Forest, twists and turns, up the hills, down the hills, etc. all in the on again off again rain. We ended up stopping every hour and a half or so to make sure that everything was still secure. Just for fun there were high wins for about the last 1 1/2 hours. So a 3 ½ hour trip ended up taking about 7 hours. We were both glad to be back home.
TVMan’s assistant came over to unload the truck and then left for a little bit. When he came back, it turns out he was bringing something that he had been holding onto for TVMan. It was my birthdaysurprise!!! It’s a 1956 Hotpoint portable tv and it’s pink and I love it!!! I was totally surprised and it was an awesome birthday gift. ** TVMan** did a very good job!
All in all, I’d say we had a fun trip and hopefully we’ll be able to head out again soon. Hopefully it will be drier next time.
So, that’s my most memorable birthday, what’s yours?
Also, since it’s still Sunday, and Father’s Day, I’d like to wish a Happy Father’s Day to TVMan and all the other dads out there!
