Treasure Hunting

A while back I was flipping through channels and saw a show about a website where people enter their zipcode and, if available in their area, are given clues and a map to find a treasure.

If you find the treasure, you can take something left by a previous participant and then you should leave something for the next person. The treasures left in the particular treasure hunt shown on the show included nature books and a video. I forget what else. You can also post a treasure hunt you create yourself for others.

The people shown on this particular hunt took the clues from the website and followed them to an abandoned rusted car in a large field. Inside the trunk was a large container of the prizes.

This sounded like a lot of fun and something that I would like to try but I didn’t write the name of the site down. Silly me thought I could remember it.

Does anyone know what I am talking about? Have you ever done it? Do you have the web address?

It’s sort of a sport called Geocaching. The idea is that you get the precise coordinates for the cache, and go there using a GPS unit. Of course, even with the coordinates the cache might still be hard to get to (halfway up a cliff, deep in the mountains, on the roof of a building, whatever).

The website is http://www.geocaching.com

They post the various caches, and anyone can go looking. You need to leave something behind and make a notation in the logbook if you take the cache.

Thank’s it! Thank you!

Have you ever played?
