Trekers, set mouths to salivate

Ok, so I went to the full showing today.

Unfortunately, they didn’t allow photos unless you had a press pass.

But, Man OH MAN!

The models they had on display there were fantastic. The Enterprise A was the first and it was well roped off. But the other models, heck you could touch them! Which I DID!

The D is stunning. I crouched under the saucer section and got really close. The detail is incredible. The ‘Reliant’ is really cool. It is labeled The Saratoga right now but she is beautiful. The E is also great and the warp nacelles on Voyager do move. I moved them!

The Warbird is kind of small. Much smaller than the Bird of Prey, that was probably the most reused model. The section of the Enterprise B, the part that is destroyed where Kirk ‘died’, they have that section. It was cool looking at it and seeing the where they green screened Scotty and Checkov.

They had a lot of Enterprise NX control panels and such and I even got to play with their transporter controls? I moved the three levers!

But the best were the costumes. They were all on hangers and you could pull them off the rack and inspect them!

That jumpsuit I want? I touched it!

Kira’s ‘chiffon bathing suit’?

Touched it! (heck, I sniffed it)

McCoy’s Space Suit? Oh, yeah, I touched that.
Kirks civi clothes from ST III? Touched them.

I think I might bid on Sulu’s clothes from that film. That leather half cape is pretty sweet.

The people at Christies were very friendly and they did say that some people have come to the showing in costume. I was listening to them talking to a reporter about the models and they were saying that with new computer modeling, these physical models are a thing of the past and that these models are probably some of the best ever made. So they are highly collectible, just from that perspective.

I don’t have any photos but I do have these black wrist bands, (like those Lance Armstrong ones) if you want one, drop me an email.

I bought the softbound two-part catalog (the hardbound cost a lot more), and have bid on about a dozen items. Christie’s accepts absentee bids by fax or mail. Much as I’d love to have a starship model, I really have no place to put it; I mostly bid on smaller stuff. The auction is Oct. 5-7, I believe; I’ll come back here after that and let my fellow Trek Dopers know if I won anything.

Oh, go ahead and bid on one of the starship models. I’d be more than happy to store it for you at no charge!

What’s the status of the intellectual property rights of the items on auction? If I bought a bunch of ship models, could I film and distribute a “Star Journey” movie (carefully avoiding trademarked names) with them?

Knowing the folks involved (Paramount, Berman) I expect youd be looking down the barrel of some severe litigation if your work had any kind of success.

Actually Paramount is fairly nice about it. They’re are loads of ‘fan flilms’ on the internet. Basically, as long as you don’t make money off it, they will leave you alone.

So I spent the day at Christies.

It was really cool. They rotated four different auctioneers through the day and it was interesting to see their different styles.

Oh, and to get up close and personal with the 1701-A.

And to see the incredible stupid ammounts of money spent on some total crap!
I only saw three people in uniform. A Captain Picard lookalike and his girlfriend and there was a Mr. Spock. Picard won the auction for the costume that Tom Hardy wore in Nemesis. (Picard’s ‘son’) That was a pretty emotional moment in the room. He really wanted it and some online bidder was putting him through the wringer to get it.

Avery Brooks dropped by the auction as well. Michael and Denise Okuda were there. Brooks just came in and chatted them for a bit. Then, between the next lots, the auctioneeer introduced Captain Sisko and he took a bow to his applause and he left.

The thing that really killed me was a medical data pad from the series Enterprise went for $24,000.00 Or should I say

TWENTY FOUR FRICKEN THOUSAND DOLLLARS!!!???!!!?!?!

Borg Cube from the film went for 80 grand and the Enterprise E went for 110 grand.

Lots of patches, mission patches from Enterprise, those went for crazy money. At least a grand a patch. The ‘pincushion man’ from Enterprise may have been the best bargin, going for $3,400, considering it is a huge piece. People paid more for a single hand phaser than that. Very few lots went for less than a grand. Maybe only 3 or 4 went for that little.

I may see the second half of tomorrow’s auction. It is being streamed live on ,IIRC, the History Channel website.

Given these prices at the hammer, I have a strong suspicion I won’t have successfully bid on anything. That’s just crazy money being thrown around.

The healthier the economy, the crazier the auctions…

A good friend of mine won a lot today.
He got one of Ben Sisko’s uniforms for only $3,800. (plus tax)

He left a friend at the auction and went to work. A few hours later he turned to watch the streaming live on the internet and saw the winning auction.

That’s some cool stuff. Thanks for the pics and links.

In fact, to all Trek Dopers, past and present, thanks. It’s been a fun ride. Who knows if any new Treks will ever be made. Sure, movie rumors, people vieing to be next in line after the Bergama, fan productions, etc… But, it’s just not the same any more.
Second star to the right and straight on til morning. Let’s see what’s out there…

Don’t sweat it, Trek was special, but there are others, and there will be more.

Heck, maybe they’ll pick up the Galaxy Quest franchise.

I struck out, dammit.

Called the Christie’s automated post-auction number today and found out that I’d successfully bid on… nothing. Zilch. I came the closest on the officers’ wardroom portrait of Lincoln from “ST: The Undiscovered Country” (Lot 754), for which I was just $50 shy of the winning bid. I suspect that no matter what I’d put down, the successful bidder would’ve bid $50 more. Most of the other things I bid on went for FAR FAR FAR more than my bid.

Crazy money, as I said, but it still woulda been nice to have gotten something. :frowning:

Looks like Paramount made out like bandits, raising much more than predicted:

*Forty Years of Star Trek Soar to $7.1 Million

by Dorothy S. Gelatt
Maine Antique Digest

Trekkers worldwide answered the call. In person and via Christie’s latest
on-line communication wonder, Christie’s Live, they poured out $7,107,040
(includes buyers’ premiums) for the 1000-lot, three-day sale held October
5-7 in New York City. The two-volume catalog, 40 Years of Star Trek: The
Collection, cost Trekkers $90 before the sale and $60 immediately after.

With a conservative estimate of only $1/3 million, the $7.1 million sale
was a windfall for the consignor, CBS Paramount Television, which made a
mint just by cleaning out some storage space. But never mind, the auction
was a historic time for fans: it was Star Trek’s 40th birthday.

Space aficionados, from museums to passionate collectors, had a vast array
to reach for, and they did. A good crowd came to bid in person in addition
to the space-age remote crowd. Among various souvenirs was a black elastic
wristband lettered in silver “Christies.com/ Star Trek 5-7 Oct 06.”

Jeanne T. Gerulskis, executive director of the Christa McAuliffe
Planetarium in Concord, New Hampshire, bought for $1200 a group of four
chairs to use in the planetarium’s lobby. “It’s my first auction,” she said
breathlessly, adding that an Alan B. Shepard Discovery Center is planned
next door and needs only another $3 million in funding.

Nine lots sold for over $100,000 each. A 78" long model of Starship
Enterprise-D, a favorite of fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation series,
brought an amazing $576,000. Dr. McCoy’s spacesuit from the original series
episode “The Tholian Web” was a highlight at $144,000.

A bump because the [del]Hitler[/del] History Channel is going to be airing a documentary about the auction. It’s followed by a program on Star Trek tech. Actually, it looks like they’ve got a bunch of Trek stuff airing shortly.
