I watched the first season but it wasn’t appointment TV. The story lines were all over the place. Too many characters, no one to really focus on.
John Goodman’s character made it worth watching though. If I watch this season, it’ll be for Lester Freamon – don’t remember his character name here.
Was there an indication of a plot for this season? The first season had the death of Joanie Stubbs’ employee to figure out. Can’t remember her character name either. Not a good sign!
AP, sadly last night’s episode seemed to be floating freely in the current, without direction. If there was a focus, is was on:
[ul]
[li]supposed gang violence[/li][li]A new Latino character from Texas (the roofer’s cousin)[/li][li]The female violin / fiddle player (street musician from last season) her real name is Lucia, can’t recall her character name[/li][/ul]
But even those were just kind of all over the place
It seemed to be primarily about the music, and establishing relationships for new viewers. I’m hoping there’s a plot line or two coming along very quickly.
You’re right, they did spend most of this episode with music. While I like - no, love - the music of New Orleans, the extended club scenes seemed to be just shoved in due to lack of story line…I hope I’m mistaken, but that’s the way it seemed to me
Part of it was showing the difference between NYC restaurants and bars and the same thing in NOLA, probably in preparation for Janette to return. The first season’s last ep was designed as a wrap, and now they’ve got to get her back to NOLA by showing how miserable she is in NYC working for a total dick. Looks like chemistry between the head cop and Toni coming our way. I really don’t like the new character from Texas, but I guess they want to show how profiteers took advantage of others’ misery.
Alan Sepinwall has seen the first five episodes and he says to stick with it. It supposedly picks up pretty quickly after the first few episodes.
Also, Anthony Bourdain gets a story credit on this season… He’s writing most of the NYC restaurant stuff… Not just giving ideas and anecdotes - but actually writing those scenes.
We finally started watching The Wire, and was almost shocked to see both Antoine and Big Chief Lambreaux in the series. It’s hard to see them in such completely different roles.
You must be one of very few who’s getting that backwards from how the rest of us got it…
I enjoyed the episode. Not much plot, mostly atmosphere… but that’s how Treme’s always been.
(The new actor playing the possibly-profiteering-guy was John Basilone on The Pacific, btw… had to look it up.)
Yeah, I watched an ep of The Wire several years ago and couldn’t get into it at all, probably because it was already a couple of seasons down the line. Since everybody raves about it, I thought I’d give it another try, from the beginning.
That’s John Seda, and he was on Homicide: Life on the Street in its last couple of seasons. I swear he looks younger now than he looked 14 years ago on HLOTS.
Here’s the list of actors on Treme that I know have worked with David Simon before: John Seda, Melissa Leo, Clarke Peters, Wendell Piere, David Morse, Steve Earle, and Khandi Alexander. Am I missing anybody?
Not sure what the actor’s name is, but one of the female chef’s roommates in NY was Ziggy in season 2 of The Wire, and also one of the main characters in Generation Kill.
I don’t think Treme’s meant to have much of a plot. It seems Simon et al. want to immerse us in the flavours of post-Katrina New Orleans. A soap opera, but serious and sober (and slow).
