I’ve got a used Tréo 650. It is a Palm based unit, not a Windows based unit. I did buy it used. Periodically, when I power it up by touching the red phone icon to the right, the unit turns on but the Keyguard is “stuck”. This is to say that when I touch the oval key in the middle to unlock it, the unit does not unlock. About 5 seconds later, it powers off.
It always powers back up, but frequently the only way to get around this bug is to pull the battery for a few seconds, and that doesn’t even work every time. It is not my primary device yet because of this bug .
I can also get the bug to stop by ejecting the brand new 2 gig SD card I have inserted into it, for future storage and back-ups.
Has anyone experienced this? I have not done the huge upgrade in software yet, I wanted to take it one step at a time. It is irrelevant that I put my contacts and calendar in- I can put them in again after the software upgrade.
Will the upgrade I’ve read about solve this issue?
Hmm… I haven’t seen that sort of thing happen, sounds like there’s something wrong with your center key. You say the only way to stop it from happening is to pull the battery or the card, but both of those are fairly “traumatic” for the phone. I’d recommend that you see if you can get the unit replaced. I doubt if the upgrade will help- but, since you haven’t really “moved into” the phone yet, the upgrade won’t be such a big deal, so it’s not a bad idea to try it.
I didn’t have time to scour the downloads on MyTreo.net, but you might find some sort of software workaround for it- they’ve got the best downloads section I’ve found, and their forums are quite useful as well.
The only problem I’ve got with my Treo is that the “n” key sometimes doesn’t register.
Check out brighthand.com. Those guys live and breathe PDA devices. Some people go to both brighthand and 1src.com. If they can’t answer your question, it’s because there is no anser to your question.
Never happened with mine.
If I had a new Treo doing what yours does I would be tempted to back up my data and do a hard factory reset (there are varying degrees of “reset” described here).
That way you can determine if the problem is hardware or software. Hopefully it’s some quirky application. A blank Treo shouldn’t do this.
Agree with Lightnin’ that the center button of the 5-way navigator on your Treo is defective. I’ve never encountered this problem in over a year of usage.
I’ve experienced this occasionally on my Treo 650.
The reason this happens is not because of a faulty center button, but because the OS sometimes takes time to register and respond to your button click event and in the interim the “5 second auto-power off when no center-click is detected” kicks in, which then powers off the phone before you can unlock the keyguard.
There are two work-arounds for this issue:
If the phone powers off even after you’ve clicked the center button, power the phone back on using the red button and try again. If it powers off again, repeat a few times. Eventually it should accept the center-click. This might be better than soft-resetting your phone each time. This works for me.
I don’t have my Treo 650 with me right now, but try this the next time you encounter this issue: Power the phone back on and Press 9 immediately. This is the first digit of the Emergency 911 number, and should keep your phone on. Now press the center button. I’ll confirm tomorrow if this works on the Treo 650 (it works on my Treo 700p, however the Treo 700p does not have the issue described in your OP, I’ve only seen that on the 650)
If this issue seems to be occurring very often on your device, go to Prefs and change the “Auto-keyguard” option from “5 seconds after power off” to “30 seconds after power off”.
I haven’t been able to get here as quickly as I would have liked, and I sent it to Palm to be overhauled. Mighta saved some heartache had I read the posts.
Still and all, Xash, as soon as I get it back, I will alter it from 5 seconds to 30 seconds. I mean, please. The battery can handle being “on” for 30 seconds instead of 5, and it may well help me avoid this issue in the future. Thanks so much !
