What is Craig Kilborn up to these days?
Love Craig, but he is the wrong fit for the current show.
David Mitchell? Or is America not ready for his brand of angry logic?
I liked Craig Ferguson, but I bet he’s burned out on the idea by now. And he doesn’t strike me as someone who wants to do a serious interview. Maybe Samantha Bee?
He mentions in his stand up routines that it’s his actual laugh. I usually assume it started out as a fake laugh and it became such a habit that it’s become his real laugh. I was watching a clip of his and the contestants on the show had him uncontrollably laughing. Someone in the comments mentioned it’s the only time they’ve ever seen him laughing ‘normally’ and someone mentioned it’s because he’s laughing so hard he maintain enough control to do the fake laugh.
In fact, on any of his shows, he tends to have a much more ‘normal’ laugh once he breaks. In this clip from I Literally Just Told You, the more everything just falls apart, the more he seems like a real boy. (In the clip, the fact that Jimmy hadn’t paid his taxes in 2012 was mentioned in the previous question).
In any case, I like his stand up, I think he does a good job hosting all these shows, but I can’t see him doing The Daily Show.
Leaving or asked to leave?
He was never a good fit frankly and I hope he can thrive outside it. He is really good.
I still watch The Daily Show regularly and think Trevor does a really good job, especially in the comedy bits, though I’m not as impressed by how he does in the interview segments. He does have a variety of guests, though from around the world.

David Mitchell? Or is America not ready for his brand of angry logic?
You might be able to balance it out if Victoria co-hosts.
Along those same lines, I think Richard Ayoade would be a better fit.
The more I watch JS’s podcast the more I think that you can’t fill that chair with a dilettante.
A depth and breadth of knowledge, a fertile and agile mind, an insightful and incisive interviewing style … for me … are non-negotiable.
As is being funny AF.
The ‘miraculous’ thing about Stewart, and – maybe to a lesser degree – some of those shows in that vein was how credible they became. They sort of replaced the Walter Cronkites as a trusted source for their target audience.
So I’d want a nonpareil rapier [two French words in a row = pretentious douche bag. I said it] wit with an intellect that stands up to any guest on the show.
I still remember Letterman interviewing Bill O’Reilly. Letterman:
I might not be smart enough to debate you point-for-point, but I have the feeling that about 60 percent of what you say is crap.
I want somebody who can either come up with a line like that, actually debate an O’Reilly ‘point-for-point,’ or … both.
But I don’t know who that is

though I’m not as impressed by how he does in the interview segments.
His interviews when he started were terrible. I couldn’t watch them, they were so cringeworthy. He got better, and I’d say actually good, but never as good as Stewart.
But then when he came back from COVID, he just wasn’t as good anymore. I don’t know what happened, if it is him or if it is how the world has changed, but for the most part, they went back to being pretty cringe again, IMHO. His monologue at the beginning is about all I can really watch anymore, and even that sometimes is a bit hard to get through.
Schlesinger is hilarious but not political.
It has to be a new show around the comic that gets the job. I agree with it being Stewart’s show and now should be something different.

Leaving or asked to leave?
I was already to jump on that comment, but I noticed these two lines in The Daily Show’s wiki page:
On September 14, 2017, it was announced that Comedy Central had extended Trevor Noah’s contract as host of The Daily Show for five years, through 2022
and
Ratings declined by about 37 percent at the start of Noah’s tenure, and have gradually increased since then, only to once again fall down to the lowest ratings in 15 years in 2020
So maybe this is more of a 'we’re not going to renew your contract" situation. I feel bad for him. Because of covid, he spent more than a quarter of his 7 years either without a show, with a show but in an empty studio or trying to do it from home. It must be a lot more difficult to not get that immediate feedback that they’re used to.
Everytime he tried to ape Stewart, it fell flat.
When he was himself he was a lot better.
Also, frankly the world and the media has changed since Stewart’s heyday.

I think Hasan Minhaj would be a good choice. He has Daily Show lineage and I thought Patriot Act was great.
Agreed. I think he’d do a fantastic job.

Schlesinger is hilarious but not political.
Does she have to be? And by ‘political’ do you mean partisan? Because she is amazing when dealing with male/female identity politics, slinging barbs at all and everyone, without ever feeling petty or vindictive.
And even though Letterman in all likelihood leaned left of center, I can’t remember him being overtly partisan, but I haven’t seen but a fraction of his shows, so maybe he was.
Schlesinger is 39, McKinnon is 38. Both are tested as comedians, are fairly well known, McKinnon more so for obvious reasons. After having a POC as a host, TDS could do worse than having a brilliant woman there.
I like Bee, but I think she’s a bit… contrived, maybe. Like she tries really, really hard, but is not really having fun, maybe too much anger is seeping through. The other others always seem to have fun.

The Daily Show was an institution created almost single-handedly by Jon Stewart. He was The Daily Show. I’ve watched very little of it since Stewart left, believing – correctly, as it turned out – that no one could replace him.
The funny thing is that when Kilborn left I wasn’t sure if Stewart would be a good replacement. It turns out that the show really, really improved with him at the helm.

Jimmy Carr? Oh hell no. Definitely not a good fit for TDS.
But as far as diversity casting goes, it’d be hard to top having Jimmy as the first Thermian to host an American talk show.
I saw Trevor Noah live a few months ago. He was hilarious! He did this bit about meeting up with some friends at an Indian restaurant in Scotland that had me rolling in the aisles. His accents were amazing.
I agree with Larry Wilmore, I loved The Nightly Show when it was one. Jessica Williams is a great choice too.
Roy Wood Jr. is absolutely hilarious and has been a great correspondent but I don’t know if he’s high energy enough.
Hasan Minhaj’s show was FANTASTIC and just as good as TDS, Last Week Tonight and Full Frontal. But with a real finger on the pulse of the youngest Millennials. You could definitely tell Hasan’s age versus those other hosts. I think he would be a great TDS host.
Samantha Bee just got canceled, she could do TDS. But I’m not sure if she would want to come back.
I like Trevor and think he was funnier than Stewart. Though I like Jon Stewart fine.

Along those same lines, I think Richard Ayoade would be a better fit.
I’d love it if Richard was the host. But for that matter I’d watch anything if he was on it.
