Trick or Treat 2018

Busy as heck here. At least a hundred visitors, and we ran out of candy for the first time. Normally, I make a candy run mid-trick or treating, as I always seems to underestimate, but I had stockpiled this time! No matter–suckers still bled me dry!

We had an average number at about 75, even though it was raining lightly. We ate early as the kids normally start showing up as soon as it gets dark, but no-one until about 6:30, then they started showing up in batches. We would have a group of 6 to 10, then nothing for 10-15 minutes, then another batch. We turned the pumpkin lights and porch light off about 8, as the last few visitors were teen girls (in costume, though) and we were getting down to the dregs in candy.

I made up ziplock bags with 6 mini bars each, so we doled out a fair amount. One little girl lucked out when she asked if we had any peanut-free goodies, as I had forgotten to prepare any, so she got two full-size chocolate bars from our dessert stash!

As usual I was out the whole night but it was raining so hard nobody would have been coming by anyway. We didn’t get to trick-or-treat and this was going to be my 13 year old daughter’s last year, she’d decided. Instead we went to an indoor trunk or treat… or rather since they had to take it indoors, a “barrel o’ treats”. They did a great job setting up fun games and even tried to bring the inflatables in to the gym but it was a nightmare. I guess people all over Memphis got word that this was one of the few indoor events on Halloween night. Adults were knocking kids out of the way to get to the games and food. We left early and ran in to Walgreens for a bag of candy just so she’d have something in her bucket.

Trick-or-treating is still really big here, it’s just with the heavy rains and the fact that there have been festivals and trunk-or-treats going on since last Thursday it wasn’t surprising not to see kids out even with umbrellas.
