Trigun's Ending (spoiler alert)

The thread on Ghost World made me think of this…

I’m talking about the Anime, not the Manga, but if it sheds any light, please let me know. Well, if you’ve seen it you know.

Did Vash kill Knives (not compromising his morals, but maturing them with the knowledge that sometimes there really is no other choice, ala his soliloquy (sp?) in a previous episode about still believing in Rem, but living by his own means), or merely gimp him (we never see him fire a lethal shot)?
Is he going to honor his promise to Meryll and return to her, or is he leaving humanity behind (symbolised when he takes off the red coat) and retreating into the wasteland?

I really want to believe that Vash has matured, and done the necessary thing (Knives will never change; he CHOOSES not to change), and will return to Meryl and enjoy his time with her (however brief it might seem to an immortal like Vash), but deep down I carry a conviction that, based on the evidence, he probably gimped Knives so he’ll depend on his good twin, and is retreating into the wild to live out their lives away from the corruption of mankind, while simultaneously protecting mankind from Knives.

The idea that he’s leaving is further foreshadowed by Knives question (paraphrased) “Did you enjoy the time you spent with them?” (not the perfect past tense) and Vash’s answer, which is something like “It was the best thing I ever did.” which also has a past-tense sound to it.

But what do you guys think?

All this time I believed (no cite) that Vash simply knocks Knives unconsious and eventually returns to Meryl. But as you pointed out these two things are mutually exclusive. The happy (?) ending would be if he killed Knives and returns to Meryl. So that’s what I’ll choose to believe from now on.

Was that a reference/quote there, or am I just imagining things?

I may have had one of those threads where people refuse to believe that some sequel or another was ever made in the back of my mind. Or maybe the old Catholic dogma “God said it. I believe it. That ends it.” As far as I know it’s not a deliberate quote though.

I just meant the “So that’s what I’ll choose to believe from now on.” Sounds like a line Vash or Wolfwood would’ve said, doesn’t it?

Hijack and shameless plug:

I’ve written a few 100-Word Shorts based on the Trigun universe.

Currently in plotting:
100 words of Knives/Legato hilarity based on the scene in Spaceballs where Colonel Sanders walks in on Dark Helmet.
