Other Dopers: Oh great, Daowajan’s getting all misty-eyed over a cartoon again…
Yes, this time it’s over the delightfully weird Trigun. I bought the first tape because the picture of Vash on the cover made him look superbad. I popped it in the VCR thinking I was getting ready to watch, you know, bang bang blood blood spurt spurt and all that. Then Vash screamed, and I knew I was in for something else entirely. I quickly became addicted to this series.
I opened this thread because of saffostar’s post in the “Cartoons that Made You Cry” thread, because we were both talking about Wolfwood’s death scene. Hmm… how shall I start Trigun-related discussion?
I’ll blither.
The only thing I didn’t like about Trigun was how the Gung-Ho Guns were each killed off or dismissed in the length of one episode. I never believed Vash was in real danger like I did in some of the earlier episodes (when he fought B.D.N, for example.) I’d have liked to see that drawn out a little more, particularly the scenes between Wolfwood and the assassin who trained him.
Also, I didn’t much care for the episode with the giant sandworms - although maybe that was intentional on the part of the writers, because I sat through the entire episode thinking “Uh… okay…” and then I freaked out when Wolfwood shot the kid.
Things I loved about Trigun:
The comedy moments, especially the tongue-in-cheek ones. “This thing sure is heavy.” “That’s because it’s so full of mercy.” Then he whips a couple of pistols out of it.
Vash! I actually fell in love with a cartoon character, and I went to sleep a couple of times worrying about what was going to happen to him! Not that I’d ever confess that to anyone… except, of course, several thousand strangers on a message board.
The first time I saw Rem, I assumed she was Vash’s dead girlfriend, as did a lot of people… It was very strange to find out she was actually just some woman he had some sort of Oedipal complex about. Although why was I not surprised?
Nyow.
