Triple Crown: We Have Winner!

Justify just became the 13th Triple Crown Winner.

And for those of us who are over 50 - his jockey has just become the oldest jockey to win the Triple Crown.

They’re talking about Sir Barton, the first Triple Crown winner. I remember that name from my youth, when I read so many “horse” books, as girls were wont to do. Margaruite Henry did “King of the Wind” about one of the founding thoroughbred sires, and in a prologue about Man O’ War, Sir Barton, a major rival, was mentioned.

And it’s cool that an older jockey won. He’s pretty much bald, isn’t he?:stuck_out_tongue:

What a tremendous accomplishment.

Do you mean the horse or the rider?

Any way you cut it.

Oldest rider to win it
Ony the second trainer to have two Triple Crowns
Only the 13th champion horse, second to be undefeated in all his prior races, first to not have raced as a two-year-old

Justify is going to have a good time! Artificial insemination is not allowed in thoroughbred breeding, it has to be done the old fashioned way. A lot of owners are going to have their fillies lined up for Justify.

The horse, of course. The different race lengths, and how close the races are to each other, make the Triple Crown very difficult for one horse to accomplish.

Congratulations to the jockey for continuing in a field he enjoys, and the trainer as well.

Now let’s get to work on race track reform. No, really.

He just looked so great, didn’t he? He was so calm and alert. Even after winning, he was relaxed and barely sweating.

Golly. I think he looked better than Pharoah.

Great idea. The whole business is dirty.

Justify looked fantastic. I hope he wins the Breeders Cup and the Grand Slam.

I think I’d retire him right this very second. He now represents millions of dollars, walking around, just waiting to break its legs in a race, or get sick in transport. It’s not worth it. Take him home, keep him healthy, and let him make babies.

That’s what I thought. He’s worth millions now, if he breaks a leg it’s whatever they’ll pay at the glue factory.

You both make good points. Retire to stud and he’ll have beautiful ladies brought to him regularly. And he’ll get paid handsomely for it. I’m 56 and as I plan for retirement, I don’t think my wife would like a retirement plan where I get paid for sex like that.

Too bad.

Kudos to Justify and his jockey!

But, my heart still belongs to Secretariat (whose speed and margin of victory records still stand today, I believe). He didn’t just want to win, he wanted to embarrass the competition (for reference, watch the '73 Belmont). That horse was a goat.

I’m with Tibby. Secretariat was great. I was 11 years old that year, 1973, and it was a great introduction to the Triple Crown races.

I heard Trump invited Justify to the White House, but he said “neigh.”

Does your Grand Slam include the “fourth jewel in the Triple Crown” - the Travers? AFAIK, the only Triple Crown winner to win the Travers as well is Whirlaway.

He couldn’t speak at length, he was a little horse.

Of course.

The Breeders Cup. American Pharoah won it.
