Triple feature?

I’ve thought for a while now that a good way to spend a rainy Sunday would be to put together a triple-feature movie party (maybe with a potluck supper in there somewhere).

But just grabbing three random movies would be boring, and running a set of sequels is probably worse, so I thought of getting an assortment of movies with a single general subject or theme, handled very differently.

For example, the subject ‘Time’ might include The Time Machine (pretty good H.G.Wells science fiction), High Noon (a psychological Western), and Clockwise (with John Cleese).

Two of the three for ‘Food’ would be Eating Raoul and My Dinner with Andre. (I’m sure the third one will come to me as soon as I post this.)

Does anybody else have any ideas?

Sorry a Triple Feature is just a bad idea, my attention span is like 12 minutes, and that is probably above average for most Americans. I think most people wouldn’t be able to sit around that long.

I’m up for three movies. I can’t think of a good themed series yet, but I’ll mull while I’m gone. Good Luck and pass the Doritoes!

We actually tried doing the triple feature thing one weekend, and it just didn’t work. Our theme was cheesy, but classic movies. We rented Death Race 2000, Evil Dead, and C.H.U.D.

Most of the girls went to another room and did their own thing. The guys stayed for Death Race, but left and did their own thing after it was finished.

I guess the problem is having so many people in the room who are friends with each other, but remaining silent the whole time. Parties are meant to be social. When they’re not, people will deviate and make it social.

So that’s what you kids are calling it these days.

We did the surreal thing once; the sequence was Heavy Metal, The Crow, and MP The Holy Grail. We had fun, and we weren’t even stoned (of course, we mocked Heavy Metal and recited the dialogue of Holy Grail with the sound muted). With those movies, it doesn’t really matter if you get bored and wander off for a little while. If one (or both) of the first two is really dark, try to finish with something funny and/or romantic. Don’t send people home depressed.

as for the third food movie, why not Babette’s Feast?

In college, we used to do this all the time. We had a circle of friends one summer that consisted of 2-3 movie buffs, 5-6 casual movie fans, and 2-3 clueless people (never seen anything) and we put together some GREAT Triple features…

Oh, with regard to the “food” triple feature, skip My Dinner With Andre. It was Louis Malle’s biggest film mistake. I’m someone who adores “talkie-art films” (BIG Whit Stilman fan) and I HATED this film. For a good Louis Malle/Andre Gregory/Wally Shawn film, get Vanya on 42nd street. At least it had a plot. Show Mr. Nice Guy instead (Jackie Chan as a cooking show host turned asskicker).

a few suggestions based on some triple features we showed:

The Prison Features:
Shawshank Redemption, Great Escape, Escape from Alcatraz

The War Features:
Full Metal Jacket, Bridge on the River Kwai, The Battle of the Bulge

The Terry Gilliam Feature (he is a genre to himself)
Brazil, Baron Munchausen, 12 Monkeys

The Sports Features:
Field of Dreams, Slapshot, The Longest Yard

“Play on Film” features:
12 Angry Men (the original), Glengarry Glenross, Vanya on 42nd Street

Cohen Brother’s features:
Raising Arizona, Fargo, Hudsucker Proxy

Teen Angst features:
American Grafitti, Rebel Without a Cause, Kids(a truly bad movie, but even bad ones can be fun)

Also you could have some true “trilogy” triple features, like Star Wars night, “Trois Couleurs” night (for the record, though subtitled, these films are QUITE enjoyable to the American viewers), Godfather night, Monty Python night, Evil Dead night, etcetera. This is a great way to spend a day when no one has anything else to do.

O_O

A Godfather double bill maybe…but how many people have the stamina to sit through ALL 3 at once? (What are they, 4 hours a peice?)

I once did *Godfather I + II * and then looked at the full uncut version of my favorite film of all time Once Upon A Time in America (~4hrs) . My ass was sore but it was worth it .

What about Shakespeare inspired night? Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood, Kenneth Branagh’s A Midwinter’s Tale and Pacino’s Looking for Richard. The Kurosawa is dark and brilliant, the Branagh is light and fun, and Pacino is just such an asshole, it’s like watching a train wreck. And it’s a good examination of Richard III, which is a damn hard play to understand.

Woody Allen night? Hitchcock night? I’m big on directors. What about Post Modern Surrealism night? Fight Club, Three Kings, and, just because I’m thinking about it, the Richard Loncrainne directed version of Richard III, starring Ian McKellen. Perhaps do the Shakespeare inspired one week, and the PMS (heh) the next, so you have a greater understanding of the politics of Richard III.

I planned on having a film club this summer, but all of my friends are more along the American Pie genre than the Kurosawas that I wanted to watch. Feh.

Jenna Jameson night

maybe an Asia Carrera night…

What? No Chasey Lain night?

I think that the 80’s night would be the biggest hit with my friends. My mom and sister and I used to get together and watch a bunch of foriegn/artsy/chick movies. You can probably make adjustments based on you and your friends’ taste. You can add more Sci-Fi/fantastic type movies to the Space movies section, if that’s the way your group leans. Another possibility would be to tell everyone what the theme is and have each couple or group bring their favorite movie with that theme. That way there are some surprises, and everyone has to watch each others’ movies. Fun. Makes me want to have a movie night tonight with my buddies!

I’d replace “Clockwise” with “Time After Time” as a great addition to the Wells motif.

Here is another suggestion for the food themed movie night. Its a good movie with an interesting twist to it.

"The Last Supper"

Inbreed Hillbilly Night:

Snake eater. (“Look! she’s got all her hair, and everythang!”)

Next Of Kin. Classiest Patrick Swazie role this side of Roadhouse.

Gator Bait 2: Cajun Justice. The title says it all.

In college, we once held a Fred Astaire/Arnold Schwarznegger Film Festival. Ahhnold was judged on his grace and style, and Fred on how many people he killed. It was a tie.

Sua

One of our favorites from highschool was “rock movie” film festival. Pick any three:

Hair
The Wall
Woodstock
Help/Hard Day’s Night
Tommy
Imagine: John Lennon
U2: Rattle and Hum
This is Spinal Tap
etc, etc.
