Mismatched Double Features

So, I received three movies from Netflix yesterday, and, having little to do, decided to spend my evening watching two of them. Each of the three clocked in at a little over 2 hours, so I’d only have time for two. My options were Sling Blade, Twelve Monkeys, and Remains of the Day.

So, I decided to go in chronological order.

Which meant I watched the Merchant-Ivory Remains of the Day, a well-acted period piece with a very British (sense and) sensibility, and followed it up with Terry Gilliam’s dystopic Twelve Monkeys.

I don’t think I’ve ever watched two such dissimilar films back to back before… have any of you?

Once in college (natch) a bunch of us watched **The Rocky Horror Picture Show ** and **Bambi ** back to back.
You have no idea how dirty that little deer is until you’ve been corrupted by Dr. Furter! And oddly enough, no alcohol was involved.

In college, during a big sleep-over, freshman year we watched “The Little Mermaid” and “Basic Instinct”.

You might have a hard time selling tickets to see 28 Days (the weepy romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock) back to back with 28 Days Later (the modern, ultra-bloody zombie movie).

What about “Dark City” and “City of Angels?”

How about a triple feature?

Once I saw Ernest Goes To Jail followed by Glory. I tell ya, Glory was the best film I’ve ever seen.

More recently, I saw Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring followed by Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. Probably should have reversed the order…

I do it all the time. I watched Jacob’s Ladder followed by Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo. Another time I watched The Ring and then Porky’s.

The reason I do that is: Real scary movies work on me. I find that a total screwball comedy right after a horror movie helps cleanse the mental palate and allow me to get a decent night’s sleep.

Most of my neftlix queue is set up so that I get weird triple features as I don’t want three comedies in a row or three movies starring Morgan Freeman. I want a comedy, a drama, and a black comedy. Or a documentary, a satire, and a romantic comedy.

It makes it all so much more interesting.

I once saw Scooby Doo followed by Insomnia.

The funny thing was… this was how the drive-in did it. The kids wanted to see Scooby Doo, so I made them go to sleep and watched Insomnia.

Also at the drive in, I saw The Perfect Storm along with Gone in 60 Seconds. While this wasn’t too different, I followed it by watching Rockey and Bullwinkle which was playing on another screen. (The sound comes through the radio, so you just have to change stations to hear the other movie)

That’s true. In fact, whenever we’ve rented a dark movie, we always make sure to have a good comedy on hand to shake things up and keep the images from settling.

Which is how we ended up this year with

The Ring/Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Schindler’s List/The Philadelphia Story

and of course,

The Exorcist/Zoolander.

Which was which?

I’ve watched some Disney films followed by a gay porno film.

Hm. Last night I saw the Incredibles again, and then came home and watched most (I’m finishing it this evening) of Sling Blade.

Mmmhmm.

I’ve got a VHS copy of Searching for Bobby Fisher which I taped off HBO several years ago. After taping a show, I’ll often switch around random channels to fill up the 5-10 minutes of extra space. Apparently, this time I landed smack in the middle of Escape from Sobibor – a Holocaust drama. So you go from this sweet, low-key, inoffensive movie about a chess prodigy, right to naked Jews being herded into the incinerators. The effect is…bizarre, to say the least.
