The hit song Duke of Earl originated from warm-up vocal exercises by the Dukays, a that included Gene Chandler, using his original name, Eugene Dixon, and Earl Edwards. The group would regularly warm up by singing “Do do do do…” in different keys. On one occasion, Dixon changed the syllables he was singing to include Earl’s name, and the chant gradually became the nonsense words “Du…du…du…Duke of Earl”.
NFL QB Earl Morrall died earlier this year. He played a key role in the Miami Dolphins’ perfect season of 1972 when he filled in for Bob Griese when Griese broke his leg late in the season. Morrall started 11 of the 17 games that year, including two of the playoff games.
