Genêt raised militias and privateering ships, largely in South Carolina, to support Revolutionary French forces.

On 8 April 1933 Western Australia voted at a referendum to secede from the Commonwealth of Australia. The proposal did not proceed as it didn’t have the approval of the Commonwealth government. Pressure for the idea of secession soon fell away because the WA voters elected the anti-secessionist Labor party to office at the simultaneous state election.

Ronald Reagan was first a Democrat who aligned with FDR and the New Deal program, but in the 1950s he started changing his views because the Democratic Party was concentrating more on individual rights rather than on a collective philosophy. Reagan endorsed Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956, and then Nixon in 1960 even though he was still a Democrat.

Reagan officially became a Republican in 1962. The reason that Reagan gave was that his views and the party’s views were no longer aligned. Reagan always maintained that he did not leave the Democratic Party, the party left him.
