Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

John G. Tower was named by female Capitol Hill staff as “The senator with whom we’d least like to be on an elevator alone,” according to an anonymous poll by Roll Call magazine which got renewed attention when he was nominated to become Secretary of Defense.

Congressman Charlie Wilson (played by Tom Hanks in the movie), as responsible as anyone for arming the Afghan *mujahedin *against the Soviet invaders, said of his staff hiring practices “You can teach 'em to type, but you can’t teach 'em to grow tits”.

Porn actress Taylor Chanel is represented as having three tits, but unadulterated photos exist of her with only two. Even she could not be taught to grow another one.

English actress Keira Knightley played characters named Elizabeth in two of her most famous movies, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl and Pride & Prejudice.

(It’s … *disturbing *that you know that, **jtur88 **… )

The 1969 song “Black Pearl”, produced by Phil Spector, was the only hit by Sonny Charles and Checkmates, Ltd. Charles later toured with Steve Miller.

The “black pearl” is the principle export from Tahiti, accounting for $10-million a year in income. They are cultured from Pinctada margaritifera, a black-mantled oyster whose natural range is from the Persian Gulf eastward to the central Pacific.

Although the Black Pearl, who worked in Mrs. Pruneface’s subversive organization, was physically involved with 88 Keyes, she felt no true affection for him (per Max Collins’s novel Dick Tracy Goes to War, though none of this was made clear in her original 1940 run in the daily strip)

The American author Pearl Buck is best known for her novel The Good Earth, which was the best-selling fiction book in the U.S. in 1931 and 1932, and for which she won the Pulitzer Prize. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1938.

Although she wrote “The Good Earth” in English, Pearl Buck had lived most of her life in China. She was a contemporary of O. E. Rolvaag, the author of the similarly-titled classic “Giants in the Earth”, which by contrast, was written in the United States, but in Norwegian.

Though set in China, Grace Zaring Stone’s The Bitter Tea of General Yen was written in English, and the Frank Capra-directed movie was the first ever shown in Radio City Music Hall.

  1. US dollar

  5. Australian dollar
  6. Swiss franc

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond insisted that an independent Scotland could continue to use the pound sterling if it seceded, but British Prime Minister David Cameron warned that it could not. The point was rendered moot when the Scots voted, 55-45%, against independence last Thursday.

A criminal jury in Scotland can return verdicts of Guilty, Not Guilty, or Not Proven. The latter two both constitute acquittals, but obviously leave different connotations publicly. Sir Walter Scott called the last one the Bastard Verdict. It is not the origin of the term “to get off scot free”, since *sceot *was an Old English word for a kind of tax.

In a criminal case, the accused is given a verdict of either guilty, or not guilty. It’s not guilty or innocent. A verdict of not guilty is not the same as a finding of someone being innocent. Logically they are not the same thing.

On 03 October 1995 the verdict for OJ Simpson in his criminal trial was not guilty, but this of course does not mean he didn’t do it. However on 11 February 1997 he was found guilty in a civil trial.

Surely he was found liable, rather than guilty, if it was a civil trial?

The Simpson Desert is a large area of dry, red sandy plain and dunes in the Northern Territory, South Australia and Queensland in central Australia. It is the fourth largest Australian desert, with an area of 176,500 km².

It was named for Alfred Allen Simpson, an Australian industrialist, philanthropist, geographer, and president of the South Australian branch of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia. Mr Simpson was also the owner of the Simpson washing machine company.

Referenced to the same post, in the USA, “not guilty” and “innocent” by law mean the same thing, as a person is innocent by default until found guilty.

Cunctator, how can the exact margins of a desert be defined to within 1,000 square km?

I don’t know. Land surveying I suppose. Presumably by Geoscience Australia, which seems to round to the nearest 250 km[sup]2[/sup].

Here is what I am questioning. The Simpson desert would have a circumference of about 1500 km, so its boundaries with 250 square kilometer precision would need to be defined with about 200 meter accuracy. A desert is not like a lake with a shoreline, it is simply an area with an average annual rainfall within a certain arbitrary value, and geographers don’t even agree on that value. The average rain doesn’t simply sharply diminish past a threshold over a space of 200 meters so that geographers can march out there and say “Here is where the rainfall is below our criteria, so we can erect a sign marking the end of the desert”.

I don’t have a problem with you quoting the authorities, I have a problem with them convincing me that they can point to a sharp line demarcating the end of a “desert”.

He was. He’s in prison on another charge, related to trying to steal back some property that was seized to fulfill the civil judgment. The civil trial followed the famous criminal trial in which he was acquitted, and he was found liable then due to a lower standard of required proof (the preponderance of evidence, not beyond a reasonable doubt).
Dan Castellanata has been the voice of Homer Simpson for all 25 seasons of “The Simpsons”, although he used a different voice in the first season. He and Julie Kavner, the voice of Marge Simpson, were previously ensemble performers on Tracy Ullman’s TV variety show, in which the show first appeared as brief animated skits.
