In Canada, the federal government has constitutional authority over penitentiaries. The Provinces has jurisdiction over prisons. The difference between the two is not defined by the Constitution, but since Confederation, convicts who receive a sentence of two years or more go to a federal penitentiary, while those who receive a sentence less than two years go to a provincial prison.
This distinction has led to the common sentence of “two years less a day”, when the sentencing judge wants to give the maximum sentence which will keep the convict in the provincial corrections system.
It has the nickname “a deuce less” from those involved in the criminal justice system.

The last convicts transported to the Australian colonies were carried in the Hougoumont, which left Britain in 1867 and arrived in Western Australia on 10 January 1868. In all, about 164,000 convicts were transported to the Australian colonies between 1788 and 1868 on board 806 ships.
Hougomont was a small estate occupied by the British and Allied forces at Waterloo, on the end of their right line. Napoleon devoted tremendous resources to capture it and threaten Wellington’s right flank, unsuccessfully. Wellington afterward said that the successful defence of Hougomont had been one of the key aspects of his success at Waterloo.
The Battle of Waterloo took place in 1815. Next year will see its bicentenary.
In the Simpsons episode “Mother Simpson”, Mr. Burns drives up to the Simpsons house in a tank and slips in a cassette which begins playing “Ride of the Valkyries”, but suddenly switches to ABBA’s “Waterloo” instead. According to the DVD commentary, the producers originally wanted to use Wham!'s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”, but licensing that song would have been too expensive.
