Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Among the patrician families of Ancient Rome the praenomen Lucius was particularly favoured by the Julii, the Licinii and the Cornelii.

Among several Cornelii who played major league baseball, the most famous was Connie Mack, as well as All-stars Connie Ryan and Cliff Floyd. Connie Mack’s grandson, Connie Mack III, served for 18 years in the US Congress. Both of them boasted the full name Cornelius Alexander McGillicuddy. Yes, there is a Connie Mack IV, an eight-year member of the US House of Representatives. His son is Conne Mack V.

According to legend Alexander the Great wanted to meet Diogenes the Cynic, of whom he had heard so much. Alexander found Diogenes sitting outside his barrel, enjoying the sunshine. Alexander offered to grant Diogenes any wish, to which he replied “please move aside so that I may enjoy the sunshine”. Alexander replied " if I were not Alexander, I would wish to be Diogenes".

The word “lobby” originated in German, and came to us after being borrowed by Latin. From /laub/, the German word for “leaf”, came the word for “arbor”, a leafy way or access area prorected from the hot sunshine by foliage.

The Nullarbor Plain in Australia takes its name from the Latin words nulla and arbor, meaning ‘no trees’.

The first Arbor Day in the USA was originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska, by territorial governor J. Sterling Morton. On April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted in Nebraska. Governor Robert Furnas of Nebraska issued the first Arbor Day Proclamation on March 31, 1874. Arbor Day is celebrated around the world.

Robert O’Neill claims to be the member of of SEAL Team Six who actually killed bin Laden, though he says he deserves no more credit than the other two dozen members of the team.

How does this relate to my previous post?

I believe he was ninja-ed by your post and never noticed. I’m playing off yours…

Lincoln’s Inn Fields is the largest square in London and the oldest in Camden. There has been public open space here since at least the 12th century when it was used as a plague pit.

It was laid out formally by Inigo Jones in the 17th century and later enclosed by Act of Parliament. At one time popular for duelists, it became more noted for the speaker’s corner to which aspiring advocates used to practice. The square was once the most fashionable address in London - perhaps as Nell Gwynne, the King’s mistress, resided there and where her bastard son, the Duke of St. Albans, was born.

“Paradise Square” in New York City was actually a triangle – bounded by Anthony, Cross and Little Water Streets. “Paradise” was also a misnomer as the square was at the heart of the Five Points neighborhood, which was for several decades in the mid 1800’s the most crime-infested disease-ridden overpopulated slum in the world. By today, the streets of Paradise Square have all changed names and the square itself is now occupied by the New York County Supreme Court building.

The 3 Musketeers bar was originally split into three pieces with three different flavors: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. When the other flavors became harder to come by during World War II, Mars decided to change to all chocolate.

Correct: apologies.

The moons of Mars are Phobos and Deimos, named for the twin sons of ares/Mars who were the gods of terror and dread respectively. Their Roman names varied with the myth, as did the identity of their mother, but the most common forms were Timor and Formido.

East Timor became the first new sovereign state of the 21st century on May 20, 2002 when Indonesia relinquished control of it.

The official languages of East Timor are Tetum and Portuguese; in those languages the country is known as Timór Lorosa’e and Timor-Leste. In any case, the name seems a repetition (‘East-East’ like Pago-Pago) since Lorosa’e is Tetum for East, Leste is Portuguese for East, and Timor derives from the Bahasa Indonesian word for East.

In the books by L. Frank Baum, the Wicked Witch of the East was more powerful than the Good Witch of the North, but not as powerful as Glinda the Good Witch of the South. She was not related to the Wicked Witch of the West.

The word ‘news’ is, contrary to popular belief, **not **an acronym of 'North, East, West, and South.

It is simply an archaic plural form of new.

In addition to singular and plural, some languages have or had dual forms. Proto-Indo-European was one of those, with evidence surviving in a few special cases, e.g. the different ending for 20 (viginti) in Latin compared with 30, 40, 50, etc. (triginta, quadraginta, quinquaginta, sexaginta, septuaginta, octoginta, nonaginta).
